Job summary

This is an exciting new opportunity to join our Blood Sciences department in Synnovis Analytics. The department is one of the largest consolidated Blood Sciences Laboratories in a new purpose-built Hub laboratory based at Blackfriars in London.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and proactive individual to join our department as an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist, with experience in working in busy automated laboratories.

This role is part of the team of BMS providing the 24/7 service within the multi-disciplinary Blood Sciences service.

You will be reporting to the Operations Managers and hold a variety of responsibilities to ensure the successful delivery of Blood Sciences services, in line with our corporate objectives.

The ideal candidate will be a quick learner and good team player and someone with aspirations of developing their biomedical scientist career in a diverse and multi-disciplinary setting. This is a great opportunity to experience working on fully automated track systems, with a variety of automated analysers.

The post holder will join our team of BMS staff and following all the appropriate training, will be expected to participate in the 24/7 Blood Sciences services provision. Depending on circumstances, cross-site working may become necessary when the Hub and Spoke service is fully established.

Main duties of the job

This role is primarily based on Floor 2 of the Hub, automated multi-disciplinary Blood Sciences Department.

As HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist your main duties will include, but not limited to:

  • Perform and interpret routine biomedical investigations by participating in regular daily workloads, as directed by management, in line with your skills, experience, and competencies.
  • Maintain standards of conduct required by the HCPC to practice as a registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • Process specimens and handle sensitive information with care and due diligence, such as patient results, in line with local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Support MLAs and APs by ensuring performance is in line with laboratory standards.
  • Ensure compliance with all legislative and quality requirements of regulatory directives, accreditation bodies, and local management, including UKAS and Synnovis policies and SOPs.
  • Participate in quality management activities, including inspections, audits, and incident reporting as required.
  • Utilise the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Q-Pulse quality management database, and other relevant software to ensure high-quality, reliable data capture and entry.

At Synnovis, we are currently shaping the future of pathology services by creating a world-leading Hub and Spoke pathology network with our NHS partners. A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London, from 1 April 2024 our people and services have moved to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests.

You will hold a variety of accountabilities in the laboratory environment. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete routine biomedical investigations in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and within specific turnaround times.
  • Operate a variety of automated analysers to provide an efficient service.
  • Develop specialist expertise in complex investigations and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Maintain the provision of a 24/7 out-of-hours service.
  • Deliver work autonomously within all regulations and legislative requirements.
  • Operate and maintain complex laboratory equipment within all safety standards relevant to your area.
  • Support colleagues with guidance and answering questions as required.
  • Use cost-effective methods in your practice and maintain levels of consumable goods and supplies in your area, and report shortages accordingly.
