Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated Clinical Scientist to join our comprehensive Genomics Service at the South East Genomic Laboratory Hub (SEGLH), based at Synnovis, Guy's Hospital. The role will be within the Developmental Disorders and the Prenatal & Reproductive Genetics teams.

The successful applicant will be dedicated and enthusiastic with knowledge of analysis, interpretation and reporting of genetic diagnostic results. Applicants should have good communication skills, be able to take initiative, support continual quality improvement and prioritise workload. The role requires attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.

The successful candidate will be joining a large, fully integrated Department with more than 120 staff and close links to Clinical Services throughout Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and St George's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. With our partner laboratories, the SEGLH provides a comprehensive genomics service for a population of 8 million, including specialist constitutional and oncology tests and an established whole exome sequencing service. The laboratory works collaboratively with other groups such as the GSTfT Biomedical Research Centre, Genetics Innovation Unit and the Assisted Conception Unit for Preimplantation Genetic Testing.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be an experienced professional who has developed their skills and theoretical knowledge to a high standard, performing a highly complex role and continuously developing clinical, scientific and technical practice within a defined field.

They will be registered with the HCPC, or working towards registration (consideration will be given to those nearing the end of their STP training for initial appointment at band 6).

The post holder will be proficient in analysis, interpretation and reporting of one or more areas within cytogenomics (variant interpretation, karyotype, breakage, QF-PCR, FISH, microarray and WGS).

The post holder will be expected to work across both our Prenatal & Reproductive Genetics and Developmental Disorders teams. They will be given responsibility for areas of service and service development and will be expected to support technical teams for a range of laboratory duties. They will be responsible for ensuring that testing and reporting are completed to a high standard within target reporting times, and be responsible for checking and authorisation of a variety of reports across both areas. The post holder will have duty scientist and test assignment responsibilities on a rotational basis and will be expected to act as a supportive member of the team.

A large part of this modernisation will involve moving 70% of our services to a purpose built, state of the art Hub laboratory in the heart of London. For now, the job you are applying for will be based at one of our hospital sites however, from 1 April 2024 our people and services will start to move to our Hub laboratory in Blackfriars, Southwark, SE1, with some work remaining in refurbished essential services laboratories across our hospital network, focusing on the rapid turnover of urgent tests. Duties and Responsibilities

Scientific & Technical

  • Provide expert analysis and interpretation of complex results in the context of the clinical referral in one or more service areas
  • To be responsible for final checking and authorisation of a variety of reports across both areas employing a high level of accuracy, attention to detail and expert scientific and clinical interpretation
  • Provide highly specialised scientific advice to service users
  • Communicate results of complex tests to service users
  • Provide expert technical support for one or more diagnostic service areas
  • Perform laboratory duties if necessary
  • Implement and propose changes to Standard Operating Procedures and service provision policies
  • Within the designated area of responsibility, the post holder will have responsibility for each of the following:
    • Health & Safety
    • Governance & Quality Improvement
    • Education & Training
  • Undertake service development and validation of new tests under direction of their Operational Lead and/or the R&D Team
  • Develop new protocols and design and supervise the pilot studies for new services
