There is an exciting opportunity to join the Haemostasis and Thrombosis laboratories, based at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital NHS trust. This Out of Core Hours (OOH) Senior Biomedical Scientist post offers candidates the opportunity to further develop their specialist knowledge and skills in specialist areas of haemostasis.

This is a great opportunity to join a dedicated, friendly, forward thinking service that is looking to invest in its staff, innovation and development. We are currently training all our staff to use newly installed state of the art Sysmex CN series coagulation analysers - the first laboratory in the UK to acquire these.
The post holder will form part of a team of 5 Senior Biomedical Scientists, who are responsible for the delivery of the Diagnostic Haemostasis Laboratory service outside core hours. They will therefore be required to work alone for much of the time. The department operates a philosophy of 'any test, any time' and so the delivery of both specialist and routine haemostasis tests will be required.
Please note: the OOH position is based at St Thomas' site only.
Main duties of the job
Technical
- To ensure that preventative maintenance schedules have been carried out on laboratory instruments prior to being used for service delivery
- To ensure that reagents are prepared, stored and used in a manner suitable for diagnostic investigations.
- To perform manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations.
- To measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures
- To undertake technical validation of the results from laboratory investigations to ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols
- To take responsibility for the calibration of laboratory instruments
- To take corrective action when quality control procedures indicate a loss of performance with instrumentation or methodology.
Scientific
- To undertake method and laboratory instrument and method evaluation as directed by the Principal Biomedical Scientist
- To initiate and/or perform research and development projects in conjunction with the Principal Biomedical Scientist, utilising Viapath Innovation academy funding streams where appropriate.
- To maintain high professional, scientific and technical standards, including adherence to SOPs and local procedures.
- The post holder will be encouraged to submit R&D , evaluation work and / or 'interesting cases' to peer reviewed journals and to present their data at scientific meetings (both local and external)

- To interpret laboratory results and take appropriate action.
- To be responsible for the authorisation and release of abnormal laboratory results for the clinical care of patients.
- To order and interpret reflex test procedures as indicated from the primary result set on patients
- To add technical and /or clinical comments as appropriate to the laboratory report prior to authorising the release of results.
- To refer clinically significant results to the Consultant Biomedical Scientist and/ or clinical Consultant for second opinion.
- To participate in clinical and /or laboratory audits as directed by the Quality Manager and/or the operations manager.
Laboratory information Systems
- To use the laboratory Information System according to authorised protocols.
- To ensure the accurate entry of information and results onto the laboratory information system.
- To contribute to the collection of OPMS (Operation and Performance Management System) data
- To comply with local policy regarding the review and acknowledgement of controlled documents though Q-Pulse
Administrative
- To ensure compliance with good laboratory practice required to meet the standards of UKAS ISO 15189
- To prepare and review Standard Operating Procedures.
- To undertake work file management to ensure that results are reported within the agreed turnaround time.
- To assist in the measurement and monitoring of turnaround times for laboratory results and take corrective action if required.
- To advise the operations manager of resources required for the efficient and effective operation of the laboratories
