Job summary
Are you a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist wanting some hands-on mass spectrometry experience, or a change of scenery? The immunosuppression monitoring service, located in the picturesque village of Harefield, is recruiting for a full-time fixed term post. You will work as part of a small team providing therapeutic drug monitoring for transplant patients across the country.
You will be trained to run and maintain, three triple quadrupole mass spectrometers with HPLC sample delivery system. Work includes manual extraction of whole blood, plasma and serum samples, reagent preparation and manual verification of analytical output.
You will also be involved in conducting audits and responsible for EQA reporting and IQC/EQA reviewing.
Operational hours are Monday-Friday 8:30-4:45pm and weekends/Bank Holidays 10:00-2:00pm. Once fully trained you will be required to participate in an out-of-hours weekend service, working approximately 1 in 4 weekends. Out of hours offers an enhanced-on call rate payment.
Main duties of the job
The post involves manual extraction of blood samples prior to analysis by HPLC-MS/MS. You will be pipetting multiples batches of 15-60 samples a day. We use liquid crash extraction method with centrifugation and supernatant decanting.
We operate three clinical mass spectrometry analysers with dual channel 2-D high pressure liquid chromatography. The systems are used for the analysis of therapeutic drugs including, immunosuppressants, antifungals and inotropes, and for Vitamin D2/D3 levels.
You will also be involved in all day-to-day tasks within the lab. Including specimen reception, use of Beaker LIMS, stock control, review of data, instrument maintenance, result validation and authorising. You will be responsible for running and maintaining a bench but will be expected to assist all grades of staff when needed.
You will need to comply with HCPC standards for professional conduct and maintain registration. You will need to work to SOP's and contribute to maintaining UKAS 15189 accreditation for immunosuppressant drug monitoring.
The ideal candidates will have completed the specialist portfolio in biochemistry or blood sciences and will have experience of working in those fields. Previous experience of MS-HPLC is desirable.
You must be confident in your time management and organisational skills, being able to prioritise work, ensuring TATs are met whilst maintaining a high standard.

We believe our arrival-to-treatment time of 27 minutes is one of the fastest in Europe. Speed of treatment has been shown to be crucial to survival in these cases.
