Job summary

We are looking to employ an enthusiastic Senior Clinical Scientist to work within our team in Clinical Biochemistry at King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCH). KCH is comprised of King's College Hospital Denmark Hill, one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK, and the district general Princess Royal University Hospital. King's College Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK and provides a range of specialist services including liver and transplantation, as well as being a Major Trauma Centre for London. Some of the specialist biochemistry services offered at King's College Hospital include porphyrins, urine steroid profiling, toxicology, trace elements and gastrointestinal investigations. You will be based at King's College Hospital but in order to meet the needs of the Trust's services you may be required to work at both sites.

Main duties of the job

You will have a specific responsibility for management of the clinical and scientific aspects of the King's College Hospital Clinical Biochemistry sendaway test process, including liaison with requesting clinical teams. As part of the ongoing transformation of core services across Synnovis, the post holder will be encouraged to build on and improve existing relationships in the Blood Sciences Laboratories across King's, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and the Princess Royal University Hospital sites.

The post holder will be required to work with the Strategic Clinical Lead for Biochemistry, Consultant Clinical Scientists and Operations Managers to provide a comprehensive scientific service including participation in the departmental Duty Biochemist rota, as well as providing expertise and input for queries relating to the Biochemistry Laboratories at King's College Hospital sites.

Job responsibilities

You will have a specific responsibility for management of the clinical and scientific aspects of the KCH Biochemistry sendaway test process, including liaison with requesting clinical teams. As part of the ongoing transformation of core services across Synnovis, the post holder will be encouraged to build on and improve existing relationships in the Blood Sciences Laboratories across Kings sites and Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will oversee the quality management within the sendaways service, including document control, audits, training and IT. In addition, the post holder will be required to assist with the teaching and training of staff, both clinical and scientific, and method evaluations within the Biochemistry Laboratories at both sites.

The post holder will be required to work with the Strategic Clinical Lead, Consultant Clinical Scientist and Operations Managers to provide a comprehensive scientific service including participation in the departmental Duty Biochemist rota, as well as providing expertise and input for queries relating to the Biochemistry Laboratories at Kings College Hospital sites.

The post holder must be able to work autonomously within professional guidelines to help to deliver a quality service to nationally accepted standards (ISO 15189). To achieve this, you will be expected to participate in audits and contribute towards the day-to-day operational

management of the departmental quality management and governance systems. The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the investigation of clinical incidents and initiate and participate in clinical audits pertinent to Clinical Biochemistry.The post holder is expected to spend a proportion of their time dedicated to UKAS-orientated activities and service development.

The Clinical Biochemistry department at KCH is comprised of a Consultant Chemical Pathologist, three Consultant Clinical Scientists, four Principal Clinical Scientists and three Senior Clinical Scientists (including this post). KCH is also an STP training centre.

You should possess an MSc and/or PhD in Clinical Biochemistry and have completed, or be close to completion of the STP (or equivalent) training programme. Ideally you will have registration as a Clinical Scientist with the HCPC. Support will be given for personal and professional development, including FRCPath tutorials, case and journal discussions and conference attendances.

Please note we would consider applicants in their final year of the STP programme who are not currently HCPC registered.
