Job summary
NEMS have an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Nurse to join the team as a First Assessment Practitioner!
The First Assessment Practitioners work with NEMS at QMC is part of the multidisciplinary team to provide high standard of patient care. The post holder works with the support and supervision of a senior clinician and in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. The First Assessment Practitioner is a key member of the team and is responsible primarily for the assessment of a patients safety to wait, red flag identification, queue priority and escalation. The practitioner is responsible for performing specific duties including but not limited to: focused history taking, vital observations and equipment and process checks. We expect all our clinicians to have a flexible approach to shift patterns and service needs which may involve working in different areas or cross site working
This role presents the opportunity to develop into other NEMS trainee and educational programmes which will harness your experience and knowledge gained in an urgent primary care setting.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties of The Job (Clinical):
To work efficiently and professionally with the multidisciplinary team to provide a safe and efficient service to all service users and their carer
To competently undertake and record (and after appropriate training) base line observations:
Temperature
Pulse
Respiration
Blood oxygen saturations
Blood pressure
Weight
Urinalysis
Blood Glucose
Peak Flow
ECG Recording
Venepuncture
- Act as first point of contact with patients and/or their carer, maintaining oversight of the waiting room.
To liaise with senior clinicians over the appropriate prioritisation of patients in the waiting room, utilising recommended early warning scores such as PEWS (Paediatric Early Warning Score) or NEWS2 (National Early Warning Score).
Able to work under minimal supervision but fully aware when to escalate concerns.
Recognising changes in patients observations/condition and reporting them to a senior clinician.
Assisting with patient treatment including patient dressings, chaperone and during any medical emergencies
To feedback, report and escalate as appropriate the condition and welfare, including safeguarding, of patients to the appropriate senior clinician
To recognise own limitations and undertake any further training to reduce these limitations essential to the role
