Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Focus as a Trainee Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, working in our NHS Hull Talking Therapies Service.

This is a full-time training contract comprising of four days per week in service and one day per week of training at the University of Sheffield. Successful completion of the course will lead to a Post Graduate Certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Interventions and a permanent contract with Focus as a High Intensity Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner.

The training year will quip you with the essential skills needed to deliver assessments and NICE recommended, evidence-based treatments. Once qualified as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, you will gain access to further career development and progression opportunities throughout your career with Focus.

The starting salary is NHS Band 4 whilst training, rising to NHS Band 5 on successful completion of the qualification.

Recruitment for the post includes a two-stage interview process. If successful at first interview stage with Focus, you will be invited to a second-stage interview with the University of Sheffield. The second-stage interview will include a role-play.

First-stage interviews will be held on Wednesday 15th and Friday 17th January 2025 online. An information session for all shortlisted candidates will also be held on Thursday 9th January 2025 from 2.00pm to 3.30pm online. Links will be sent once shortlisting has been concluded.

Main duties of the job

As part of our Low Intensity CBT Team, you will provide a range of evidence-based low intensity interventions to patients presenting with mild to moderate common mental health problems. Interventions will be provided one-to-one, either in-person, by telephone or online.

Alongside delivering interventions, you will attend regular case management supervision, clinical skills and line management supervision.

Our NHS Hull Talking Therapies service works with adults aged 18+ who are registered with a GP in Hull. As per the national NHS Talking Therapies framework, interventions will be delivered in line with the stepped-care approach, with patients being stepped-up to Step 3 high intensity interventions if required.

To be eligible to apply, you must provide evidence of previous study at degree level, have the ability to study at post-graduate level and have prior experience of working in a mental health or equivalent setting, either in a paid or voluntary capacity.

  • Accept referrals via agreed service protocols
  • Assess clients for suitability for CBT. Where problems appear too complex and/or severe to be appropriate for trainee therapists, refer to the Senior Therapist: LI CBT for further advice
  • Provide a range of low intensity interventions, including guided self-help, either face-to-face, over the telephone or via other media
  • Adhere to agreed guidelines with regards to waiting times, number and frequency of sessions, review and discharge
  • Attend clinical and/or multi-disciplinary meetings as required by the service
  • Adhere to all requirements regarding data collection within the service
  • Keep coherent records in line with service requirements

Training & Supervision

  • Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post
  • Apply learning from the training programme into clinical practice within the service

  • Ensure interventions are delivered in-line with key performance indicators, including but not limited to recovery rates, patient choice and patient experience
