Job summary

As a Families and Parenting Recovery Coordinator - within the Building Bridges Project, you will play a crucial role in providing dedicated therapeutic interventions and support to families in need. Working closely with St Helens Children's Services and partner agencies, you will contribute to a collaborative effort to identify and address substance use issues within families. Under the guidance of the Team Leader, you will deliver comprehensive care packages to adult service users while also providing specialist insight into the impact of parental substance use on children.

Main duties of the job

The focus of this role is to provide intensive key work to families who have drug and/or alcohol misuse issues which could potentially putting their children, families or themselves at risk.

Workers will work to help families overcome complex problems which will enable them to become reintegrated into society. This role will cover operational sites as required, including community locations and family homes.

Recognition that young people need to be treated differently from adult service users and the language of recovery and treatment may not be relevant.

Are you passionate about supporting families impacted by substance use? St Helens Integrated Recovery Service is seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a Recovery Coordinator - Families and Parenting for the innovative Building Bridges Project.

About Us: At St Helens Integrated Recovery Service, we are committed to providing rapid and open access to assessment and interventions for individuals facing challenges with drugs and/or alcohol. Our mission is to facilitate the transition from addiction to independence through a range of clinical and psychosocial interventions. As part of this mission, we have developed the Building Bridges Service, an established team that takes a holistic, family-centred approach to supporting families affected by parental substance use.

Job responsibilities

The individual in this role will function as an essential member of the multi-disciplinary team within the specified service, contributing to the delivery of exceptional quality provision by providing support to service users and their families from their initial engagement with the service right through their journey of treatment and recovery.

The primary objective of this position is to deliver focused key support to families grappling with issues related to drug and/or alcohol misuse, which may pose potential risks to their children, families, or themselves. Our team will diligently assist families in addressing complex challenges, empowering them to reintegrate into society successfully. Flexibility is key, as this role will encompass various operational sites, including community venues and family residences. It's important to acknowledge that young individuals may require distinct approaches compared to adult service users, and traditional concepts like 'recovery' and 'treatment' may not always align with their needs.

Your main duties will include:-

Act as main care coordinator in various venues and locations overseeing assigned groups of service users, providing:-

oscreening; asset mapping; comprehensive assessments; recovery planning (using motivational

ointerviewing techniques) and reviews of care.

oCoordinate a tailor-made package of care including:

oRecognised psycho-social interventions;

o1to1 key work, POD and group work;

oClinical interventions;

oHarm minimisation and brief interventions.

The post holder will be the broker for these interventions, but will not regularly deliver them.

Carry out comprehensive service user assessments, including asset mapping of community resources and develop individual recovery plans that clearly identify how achieving each goal will enable progression in addressing substance use and re/integrating into the community.

Support the development of service based recovery communities.

Further develop CGLs links with local recovery groups / mutual aid groups.

Ensure the timely and accurate collection, recording and reporting of specified data.

Assess suitability for groups in terms of risk and special needs.

Carry out risk assessments and risk management.

Triage assessment and onward referral to a range of treatment/community support agencies.

Work with prescribing clinicians to support substitute prescribing regimes to improve social functioning.

To be creative and innovative so that the post best meets the needs of the service user, promoting access in to treatment, and continued engagement with underrepresented communities.

Ensure that all aspects of confidentiality are adhered to and that consent to share information is a key element to building trusting therapeutic alliances.

Help individuals to develop recovery resources and access peer and mutual support groups to develop their own recovery capital.

Work and liaise with other agencies involved with the service users broader care plan including health services, hospitals and GPs.

To support the smooth running of the service, by contributing to tasks such as reception, duty cover, and clinical duties on an ad hoc basis.

Provide health education especially in regard to harm minimisation, blood borne viruses and overdose prevention.

To assist and carry out appropriate screening processes including DBST, urine and saliva tests, after completion of appropriate training or demonstration of relevant experience.

To carry out key harm reduction strategies such as running of the Needle Exchange and distribution of Naloxone, after completion of appropriate training or demonstration of relevant experience.

Work with families to help develop their life skills, this may include: budgeting; managing finances; cookery; parenting; accessing numeracy and literacy classes; supporting access into education/employment.

Provide interventions via 121 and groups. Groups will include (but are not limited to): practical parenting advice; support groups; social groups; fathers groups; therapeutic groups.

The post holder will work closely with local Social Services Teams and Family Intervention Projects where they exist.

Work closely with your services Safeguarding Lead, to ensure all issues and concerns are escalated and dealt with quickly and effectively.

Signpost and support parents and/or carers into treatment where necessary.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with families displaying challenging behaviour in one or more of the following fields: social work; youth offending; substance misuse; probation; health; family work; education; youth and community.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviour in a calm and professional manner.
  • Knowledge of current legislation surrounding young people and safeguarding practice.
  • Sound working knowledge of Child Protection.
  • Sensitivity in working with complex family issues.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective interventions in enabling young people and adults to improve their life skills/opportunities.
  • Excellent understanding of drug and alcohol issues and experience of working within a related field.
  • A commitment to multi-agency working and establishing partnerships with other professions to achieve good outcomes for the service user group, e.g. mental health services, criminal justice agencies, community groups, etc.
  • Accomplished written and verbal communication skills and a high degree of personal IT competency. The ability to accurately update and maintain records in a timely fashion and to work to deadlines for the submission of information, e.g. reports.
