This is an exciting opportunity for a Head of Service passionate about delivering care through Urgent Treatment Centres, to join our dynamic and forward-thinking team in a critical stage of our organisational development.

NHUC is a not-for-profit, Community Benefit Society, delivering care across Frimley and Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICBs.

This role is ideal for someone with experience and background in urgent care looking for their next career move. The Head of Service will report directly to the Director of Operations and the executive team. As part of the management team, you will help drive the success of the organisation and have every opportunity to help shape the future of NHUC.

About us

NHUC is a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society, working in partnership with the NHS. NHUC provides services through two divisions, Same Day Care (SDC) and TalkPlus.

SDC provides services through the Integrated Urgent Care (IUC) contract which covers the in Hours Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) and Out of Hours (OOH) provision for North Hampshire, North East Hampshire and Farnham (NEHF) and Surrey Heath places which are part of the Hampshire and the Isle of Wight ICB and Frimley ICB respectively. SDC also support projects such as ED streaming in Frimley Park Hospital and the Aldershot Urgent Care Centre in the Aldershot Centre for Health. It also holds some smaller contacts such as supporting Community Hospitals OOH and Flu response. Finally, SDC has a virtual care arm supporting patients at home.

TalkPlus provide NHS Talking Therapies, supporting people with common mental health problems in Northeast Hampshire and Farnham place. TalkPlus offers a range of treatments to people who are experiencing symptoms of stress, anxiety, low mood, depression, panic, phobias or OCD. TalkPlus has care pathways to provide timely treatment for perinatal and military veteran referrals.

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

To take full responsibility of the day to day operations and future growth of NHUCs UTCs, working with a high level of autonomy as a Senior Leader reporting directly to the Executive team.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Professional

  • To rapidly establish and then maintain excellent working relationships with the leadership and operational teams of our contract holders (HHFT and FHFT)
  • To establish effective working relations with all members of the multidisciplinary team to promote good communication and a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Ensure UTC policies and procedures are up-to-date and that all staff comply to agreed policies and maintain best practice
  • Participate in the investigation of accidents, incidents and complaints; implement corrective action where necessary in consultation with the governance team
  • To manage conflict promptly and effectively, supporting and promoting effective working relationships within the multidisciplinary team and initiating and evaluation any action plans.
  • Ensure the maintenance of a safe working environment and that all areas have a named Health and Safety representative.
  • To ensure that COSHH and Infection Control policies are implemented and that every effort is made to identify and minimise potential risks/hazards.
  • Implement audit and benchmarking processes, quality road maps, and making improvement as required.

  • To be responsible for undertaking risk assessments in line with NHUCs Risk Management Policy.
  • To be responsible for the implementation of safe working practices as required by Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure the staff in UTC are maintaining accurate and contemporaneous training records.

Operational Management

  • To be responsible for the day to day effective and efficient management of UTC staff, support staff and equipment within the department.
  • To continually assess and model skill mix and patient demographics to ensure capacity is optimized
  • To manage all income and expenditure for the UTCs, assess the financial position on an ongoing basis and work with the finance team on preparation of budgets and forecasts
  • Direct and manage all aspects of the department on a daily basis to ensure smooth and safe running
  • Lead and support systems of induction, staff appraisals and management to allow for appropriate developmental activities.
  • Act as the central point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Attend regular group meetings external to UTC as required to ensure the UTC has appropriate representation.
  • Responsible in conjunction with the Clinical resource team in ensuring rotas, annual leave and the use of flexible staff are based on the needs and funding envelope of the service
  • Responsible for ensuring all line management activities are completed and followed for operational staff which includes but not limited to absence, annual leave, appraisals
  • To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of patient records, in accordance with NHUC IG policies and procedures
  • To ensure that there is effective communication in place to allow staff to keep abreast of developments within the organisation by encouraging use of NHUC Connect
  • lead the recruitment and selection of staff in consultation with the Clinical Lead and HR.
  • Participate as an active member of the on call rota.

General

  • Ensure key performance indicators are meeting local and national standards, investigate any areas indicating improvement requirement.
  • Ensure internal and external reporting requirements are met
  • To proactively horizon scan for potential business opportunities within the UTC or related areas and submit business cases to push these potential opportunities forwards
  • To innovatively review business on an ongoing basis to improve patient experience and cost effectiveness
  • Undertake mandatory and statutory training as per NHUC requirements and ensure team undertakes the same.
  • Utilise opportunities to develop skills and knowledge further, learn from others, and keep up-to-date with current practice in this field.
  • Provide coaching and development to other members of the team.
  • Demonstrate use of excellent communication skills to support patients and their families in highly stressful situations and to ensure staff are supported to develop these skills.
