Job summary

This role involves leading a team of Cardiac Physiologists, ensuring that adult trans-thoracic echocardiograms are performed and reported according to BSE standards and local guidelines. The responsibilities include overseeing equipment quality checks, managing report submissions, archiving study images, and coordinating with hospital departments and GP practices for urgent referrals.

Main duties of the job

You will lead and oversee a diverse team of Cardiac Physiologists who will perform and report adult trans-thoracic echocardiograms in line with BSE minimum data set and local reporting guidelines. Ensure quality assurance checks on equipment and action as appropriate. Submit reports and archive study images in accordance with contractual requirements and local SOPs. Liaise with relevant hospital departments and GP practices for urgent clinical referrals.

Job responsibilities

What you are responsible for:

Clinical

  • To independently perform adult transthoracic echocardiograms in line with BSE minimum data set ad local reporting guidelines
  • Responsible for and have a care of duty of patients whilst carrying out all encounters.
  • To obtain formal/informal consent for procedures, and to check for any contra-indications for the tests.
  • During investigations to ensure that diagnostic results are produced and stored in line with SOPs.
  • Maintain and calibrate the equipment used to perform diagnostic tests and procedures.

Operations

  • Support Operational staff with organising and coordinating cardiac physiologist to ensure clinical capacity requirements are always met.
  • Provide the patient with all the relevant details of the test being performed to them.
  • Instruct patients as to when they will be seen by doctors to discuss test results.
  • Communicate with internal staff and external companies regarding breakdown/maintenance of equipment.
  • Expediting abnormal findings to the appropriate members of staff. Give professional advice and opinion if applicable and where necessary.
  • Use of effective time management in a high workload area daily.

People Management

  • Effectively communicate complex medical information to patients in a clear and empathetic manner
  • Skilfully manage interactions with challenging patients, including those who are elderly, have disabilities, or have mental health conditions.
  • Provide support and mentorship to all team members
  • Guide and provide educational support and training to your team
  • Provide hands-on echocardiography training and other diagnostic procedures, regularly assess junior staff's skills, to help them achieve British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) standards.
  • Promote equal opportunities for all staff
  • Direct and supervise the workload of the cardiac physiologists under your training and supervision
  • Ensure there is professional development and training for all staff reporting to you

Commercial & Service Development

  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including NHS commissioners and healthcare providers, ensuring efficient communication and service delivery.
  • Lead the organisation through BSE departmental accreditation and promote best practice across the service.

Quality & Audit

  • Complete audits of clinical activity provided by Cardiac Physiologists.
  • Support Cardiac Physiologists currently working towards their BSE accreditation.
  • Hold regular review meeting with clinical staff to provide guidance for improvement and development.
  • Play an active part in clinical governance such as investigating complaints and reviewing incidents for learning actions.
  • Provide advice to senior and operational managers on clinically related matters.
  • Drive quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service standards.
  • Oversee risk management protocols within your team, identifying and mitigating potential risks.
  • Participate in the companys Clinical Advisory Board for Echo services, provide suggestions on managing a safe and patient centric service.

  • Review and triage patient referrals received in to the service in line with the service contract and best practice.
