Job summary

Starting January 2021, we are pleased to advise that we are offering Student Paramedic opportunities. Undertaking a fixed term training & education programme for 30 months to become a HCPC Registered Paramedic.

Classroom learning will be completed from our Bristol HQ; however, this post is open to candidates who are able to work from any of our current operational bases across Southern England. This programme will give you the opportunity to learn vocational skills by working as part of an operational ambulance service whilst being fully supervised by a qualified practitioner.

Following clinical training, candidates will be put through Blue Light qualification as part of their training; this is a prestigious qualification and we are delighted to be able to develop future emergency service workforce.

Main duties of the job

Attend case of accident and sudden illness and respond to urgent, special and planned patient transfer requests.

To use advanced driving skills under blue light and normal traffic conditions to respond to emergency and routine calls as required.

The delivery of high quality and effective clinical and personal care and the transportation of patients, selecting and applying appropriate equipment and skills in line with the scope of practice, training prospectus and associated training.

You will have good standard of education with Maths & English GCSE or equivalent.

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

Undertake a fixed term training & education programme facilitated by MediPro for 24 months to become a HCPC Registered Paramedic within Bristol Ambulance Service.

The first 12 months will be an apprenticeship in the Level 4 Futurequals Associate Ambulance Practitioner programme where you will be required to undertake an initial 12 week training course followed by 750 hours of clinical practice aimed at preparing students for year 2 (level 6).

The following 12 months will be a level 6 Diploma in Paramedic Practice with an initial intensive 12 week classroom block followed by 750 hours of clinical placement consisting of Emergency Ambulance work, Observation shifts and Hospital Placements. Once completed and students become registered with the HCPC as a Paramedic, there will be a 12 month Newly Qualified Paramedic period consolidating knowledge, ensuring staff welfare and monitoring ability. Once this is completed to a satisfactory standard staff will continue as an NQP for a further 12 months with regular support from the training and operational teams.

All students would be paid for any classroom time. All ambulance placements would be paid. Hospital placements would not be paid. No course fees would be passed on to the students. Students would sign a learning agreement making them liable for any costs incurred by Bristol Ambulance for their training should they leave within 4 years of starting the programme.

You will be responsible for providing care, assessment, diagnosis, treatment and movement of patients in and out of hospital in emergency and non- emergency situations across a wide range of patient groups and in a wide range of difficult settings.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

. 1.1. Attend the planned programme of training and education

. 1.2. Adhere to the appropriate job description as per stage of development (ie: ECA/AAP)

. 1.3. Presentation at all times of a smart appearance incorporating current regulations relating to the wearing of uniforms.

. 1.4. Adherence to the Code of Conduct, Operational Instructions, Quality Procedures, other verbal or written instructions promulgated by the Service currently or in the future.

. 1.5. The maintenance of factual and accurate records as required by the Service.

. 1.6. Accurately and factually complete all clincial documentation including confidential details as required by the service to their skill level and ability.

. 1.7. The post holder will be required to attend all training courses as and when required in order to acquire additional skills and competencies as requested by the Service.

. 1.8. Required to have knowledge of current procedures for Radio, Automatic Vehicle Location System and satellite navigation unit to promote a prompt response to emergency calls and urgent removals

1.9. Required to operate both internal and external environments during inclement weather conditions with various degrees of light and darkness

. 1.20. Conduct dynamic risk assessment when responding to incidents for the protection of yourself your crewmate and the patient, as physical and/verbal abuse may be present on occasions, complying with Bristol Ambulances Health and Safety policy at all times, in the support of the organisation to act safely and responsibly in relation to staff, patients, and the communities in which they work.

. 1.21. When required, liaise with members of the other emergency services

. 1.22. On occasions may be expected to give evidence to Her Majestys Coroner or Crown Court.

. 1.23. To be aware of, recognise and report to the appropriate authorities any concerns regarding child abuse under the 1989 Childrens Act

. 1.24. To participate in audits and equipment evaluations and testing as required.
