Job summary

*Zero hours contracts - New to Taurus employees will normally start at the first pay point on the salary band*

Flexible working (Monday – Friday Evenings and weekend daytime)

Location: Based across the 6 hubs in Herefordshire (Hereford, Kington, Ross-on-Wye, Leominster, Ledbury and Bromyard) - Mileage payable working away from assigned base hub location.

As a Healthcare Assistant or Phlebotomist you will become part of our friendly primary care team. You will be responsible for the delivery of outstanding care to our patients.

We are looking for motivated individuals who want a rewarding role, as part of a service that makes a difference.

The HCA will work under the supervision of the Practice Nurse performing procedures such as ECGs, phlebotomy and straightforward wound management. Similarly, our Phlebotomists will work under the direct supervision of the Practice Nurse but be responsible for drawing blood samples from patients as requested by clinicians and ensuring their correct processing, labelling, and storage. Both roles will uphold infection prevention and control policies and standards to a high level.

Main duties of the job

· Phlebotomy

· ECGs

· Taking blood pressure

· Chaperoning duties

· Simple dressings

· Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/Nurses

· Equipment checks / ordering as delegated by Practice Nurse on site

· Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms

· Maintaining stock levels of Taurus stock items

· Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

Job responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

The HCA will work under the supervision of a Practice Nurse, Advanced Clinical Practitioner or GP performing nursing tasks, investigative procedures such as ECG’s, phlebotomy and undertake simple wound care.

Main Responsibilities

· Working within guidelines for, undertake and record the following tasks

· Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for Path lab investigation

· Health checks

· ECGs & linking in with GP or Advanced Clinical Practitioner for review )

· Phlebotomy

· The measurement of:

     Ø Blood pressure

     Ø Pulse rate and rhythm

     Ø Respiratory rate

     Ø Temperature

     Ø Height and Weight

     Ø Waist Circumference and Body Mass Index

     Ø Diabetic foot check

· Chaperoning duties

· Under take simple wound care and be able to (with training):-

· Recognise when wounds are not responding and seek advice appropriately

· Provide care for uncomplicated wounds and apply a range of dressings according to assessed need under the direction of a registered nurse

· Ascertain pain level caused by wounds and seek advice appropriately

· Advise patients on general health care and promote disease prevention opportunistically.

· Undertake equipment checks / ordering as delegated by Practice Nurse on site

· Undertake clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms

· Maintaining stock levels of Taurus stock items

· Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

· Identify carers and encourage registration with carers support agency

· Record fridge temperatures, reporting deviances to hub GP

· Undertake Quality control tests for d-dimer / BNP equipment

· Work with receptionist to secure safe storage of Taurus equipment at the end of clinical session.

· With receptionist dispose of clinical and domestic waste from rooms used by Taurus

· Work with receptionist to ensure safe and secure closure of building at end of working day

· Be able to recognise need for urgent /emergency care taking immediate necessary action, calling for help and alerting clinicians for example in the event of anaphylaxis or cardiac arrest.

· Know and adhere to guidelines for the management of samples

· Have the insight and confidence to recognise and work at all times within the boundaries of safe practice based on your own competence and the limitations of the HCA role

· To carry any other appropriate duties as required.

Higher grade duties for those with additional training:

· Under supervisor of the PSD, provide Flu and Pneumonia vaccinations during campaigns

· B12 injections

· Suture removal
