Job summary

Dispensary Receptionist (Taurus Healthcare are advertising on behalf of Much Birch Surgery)

Up to 22 hours per week (mainly afternoons up to 5pm)

Initially 6 month fixed term temporary contract

Much Birch Surgery seek to appoint a part time member of staff to join our friendly team. The ideal candidate will be a hard working individual with a high level of self-motivation to assist the dispensary with the collection of prepared medication. The successful candidate must be confident to work unsupervised. Excellent customer service skills, good keyboard skills and computer literacy are essential, previous experience of General Practice or Pharmacy and Emis Web is desirable.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to provide a respectful, efficient and accurate service to the patients whilst upholding professionalism at all times. Some of the daily tasks will be handing out prepared medication, taking prescription requests verbally and electronically from patients and their representatives.The job will also include assisting the dispensary with their administration, some of which will be daily, weekly and/or monthly. These can include:

Resolving patients queries or passing on to an appropriate team member, this may be verbal, electronic or via telephone call.

Adding stock onto the system

Checking invoices and dealing with any discrepancies and liaising with the wholesalers

Counting and filing prescriptions

Accepting and completing the destruction of returned unwanted medication

A willingness to provide sickness and holiday cover for colleagues is essential.

About us

Much Birch Surgery is a 5 partner, rural dispensing practice at the heart of the community, with a practice list size of 5000 patients. The practice covers an area reaching from the edges of Hereford to Ross on Wye, extending into the villages of the Golden Valley. The practice has a small dispensary collection point located in the car park from which patients collect their dispensed medication served by the dispensary receptionist.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will project a positive and friendly image to dispensary patients and other visitors and deal with queries in a professional, courteous and efficient way.

To provide a safe, efficient and accurate service to patients, to assist with requests of medication, filing, sorting and the handing out of prepared medication and to perform duties in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Duties and responsibilities:

Update patients repeat screens on Doctors instructions

Issuing stock items and prepared prescriptions

Collection of prescription charges/checking patient exemption statements

Cash handling and banking

Take prescription repeats over the telephone, by email and at the patients hatch

Sort, stamp and endorse prescriptions

Complete backs of prescriptions

Operation of efficient stock control appropriate to the needs of the dispensary with the objective of ensuring continuity of supply for patients and minimising wastage

Ensuring that drugs are received, entered into stock and stored in an appropriate manner in accordance with the manufacturers instructions

Cleaning work surfaces and shelving on a regular basis and ensuring that that all dispensary equipment is kept clean and kept in good working order.

Maintaining full and accurate records of all dispensing transactions.

Monitor and record days prescriptions (paid and exempt) and reconcile this with the till and cash/cheques received.

Use computer and IT systems

Attend team meetings and training.

Aid in keeping check of the patient uncollected dispensed items, including cancelling issues, returning to stock (where appropriate) and informing GP when necessary.

Participating in and completing training within a reasonable time frame for any dispensing training as your line manager sees fit.

Undertaking other reasonable duties within the framework of the post as directed by the dispensary manager.
