Job summary

We are seeking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic pharmacist who are able to thrive in a busy environment. They must have a "can do and will do" attitude and be able to overcome challenges in the day to day operations of the pharmacy, setting and maintaining the high standards expected by the GPhC, the Trust and patients.

It is essential that the candidates demonstrate good team and communication skills and work with the Superintendent Pharmacist to ensure high standards are maintained. The post holders should also be able to work innovatively and be pro-active in developing the pharmacy in an ever changing NHS.

The pharmacy operates various opening times on different sites that range between 8am to 7.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.

This is a unique opportunity to work in an outpatient pharmacy service in one of the leading NHS Foundation Trusts in the UK.

Main duties of the job

To ensure the safe, efficient and effective delivery of all aspects of the Outpatient Pharmacy Service to patients and users by maintaining high standard of professionalism and safety in accordance with national and local standards (GPhC and DoH).

To provide day to day leadership and act as a role model for all staff within CW Medicines Ltd

To contribute to the efficient management and administration of the business

To work collaboratively and co-operatively with the Superintendent Pharmacist and other Pharmacists in order to avoid or minimise the use of locum pharmacists

CW Medicines Ltd is a new subsidiary company of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Operating from two different pharmacy sites (369 Fulham Road and 56 Dean Street), the company provides the outpatient dispensing services for patients of the Trust. Working in partnership with the Trust, the company is committed to developing a high-quality, professional and innovative service for patients and staff.

Job responsibilities

1. Staff management, training and development

To manage and develop all pharmacy staff and ensure effective recruitment, selection, induction and performance management of an appropriately qualified and flexible team.

To provide professional leadership and advice to all pharmacy staff working for the company

To ensure all pharmacy staff have appropriate opportunities and support for training and development and are acting in accordance with the Code of Ethics and requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

To contribute to appropriate processes for assessing competency of pharmacy staff

To contribute to the development and maintenance of effective and efficient working processes for staff to follow.

To ensure that all disciplinary matters requiring attention in the absence of the deputy/superintendent pharmacist are fairly, promptly and professionally handled including appropriate accurate record keeping

2. Operational Management

To ensure that all activity undertaken is consistent with maintaining registration of the premises with GPhC.

To ensure the Medicines (Pharmacies) (Responsible Pharmacist) Regulations 2008 are adhered to at all times and ensure that the Pharmacy Record is maintained at all times.

To ensure delivery of timely, effective and efficient clinical and technical pharmacy services within available resources.

To contribute to ensuring that up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures are in place as required by GPhC.

To clearly communicate and document arrangements which are to apply during the absence of the responsible pharmacist from the premises.

To ensure prescription records are legally compliant and in accordance with GPhC guidance.

To ensure the optimal deployment and use of available scheduled pharmacy staff on a day-to-day basis

To ensure good communication between all sectors of the Trust pharmacy and with departments and directorates to whom the out-patient pharmacy service is provided.

To contribute to ensuring that there is an appropriate skill mix within the pharmacy and promote the extended roles of technicians and the appropriate use of technology, such as automation.

Contribute to the development of a customer satisfying retail offer within the available space.

To work with prescribers to enhance and develop the out-patient pharmacy service that patients receive.

If requested, present at appropriate events advice on and the best use of medicines.

To ensure that medicines are stored in appropriate conditions and temperature logs are kept.

To contribute to ensuring that procedures are in place for the safe disposal of returned medicines from individuals or households and expired pharmacy stock medications.

To contribute to keeping main information services and/or reference sources available and up to date.

To contribute to ensuring that patient information leaflets, posters and website are all kept up to date and present a professional image.

To contribute to ensuring that the pharmacy premises are maintained to a high professional standard at all times.

To contribute to the introduction of new or revised working processes to optimise the quality of work and the profitability of the business.

3. Management of Controlled Drugs

To ensure that the principles outlined in the DH publication The Safer Management of Controlled Drugs (CDs) are adhered to all times.

To ensure the day-to-day safe and appropriate management of CDs in the pharmacy. Legal responsibility for CDs whilst acting as RP will remain with the Responsible Pharmacist.

To ensure the safe management of CDs such as ordering, receipt, record-keeping are developed and maintained whilst acting as Responsible Pharmacist.

To ensure the controlled drug register is maintained and the balance is reconciled against the stock of every CD.

To ensure any discrepancies in the actual versus recorded balance of any CD discovered during an audit or the dispensing procedure will be investigated and resolved and reported without delay.

To contribute to the development and maintenance of systems jointly with the CWHFT Accountable Officer to ensure appropriate prescribing of controlled drugs.

4. Medicines management

To contribute to safe and secure medicines practice. This includes medicines selection, procurement, storage, preparation, dispensing, supply and patient education.

To support adherence of prescribing practice to the hospital formulary as advised by the Trust Medicines Group (TMG) at CWHFT.

To contribute to and support development and implementation of systems for the monitoring and review of medicines expenditure by directorates within out-patients.

To contribute to compliance with local and national standards of practice and legislation through audit processes, including external audits & quality improvement initiatives.

To work with prescribers and hospital finance staff, where appropriate to enhance cost effective prescribing and prescribing budget adherence.

To contribute to the maintenance of the pharmacy quality management system

5. Financial

To ensure all pharmacy transactions, including ordering and receipt of medicines and collection of pharmacy related income complies with standing financial instructions and national guidance and legislation.

To have delegated day-to-day authority for the purchase, receipt and storage of all medicines used by the company.

To ensure pharmacy stock-holding levels are appropriate, monitored, and are handled safely and securely
