Provide High Quality Care to Patients
The post-holder must be medically qualified, eligible for GMC specialist registration and to hold an ARSAC licence, and hold licence to practice which must be maintained.
The post-holder must develop and maintain competencies required to carry out the duties of the post.
The post-holder must ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
The post-holder must ensure patients are involved in decisions about care and respond to their views.
Research, Teaching and Training
This is a 50% clinical academic post within KCL BMEIS and the post-holder will:
Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts and the Colleges translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Research Governance.
Be actively involved in the on-going research within the School of BMEIS, Research Department of ICAB and other School Research Departments, including obtaining required Regulatory approvals when required
Contribute to the further development of the PET and ICAB research programmes, including leading the development of a viable programme of work in relation to Total Body PET imaging.
Be expected to attract substantive grant funding to support a research group, as per current KCL Academic Research Framework.
Have the opportunity to develop and lead clinical trials testing PET risk adapted therapy in lymphoma and other cancers as part of the KCL PET international research programme through the UK PET core lab team which co-ordinates a network of 50 UK imaging centres based at St Thomas Hospital.
Assist other researchers within the School of BMEIS and other research departments in achieving their ambitions.
Be required to provide teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Head of the Research Department of ICAB or Head of School.
May be required to act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Heads of the PET Centre, Research Departments or School to ensure external accreditation of training posts.
Be expected to contribute to the training and support of doctors/radiographers in training, and to supervise visiting fellows to the School of BMEIS and support their educational needs to achieve their desired accreditation levels.
Clinical Service Delivery
The post-holder will fulfil the following clinical commitments:
Support to PET imaging lists and high quality reporting of images on weekly basis, maintaining reporting rates in line with clinical lead and Departmental expectations.
Diagnosis of patients referred to GSTT and partner trusts.
Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation to, and training of, junior staff.
Clinical management of inpatients and outpatients of the PET services.
To participate in the weekly Multi-Disciplinary Meetings relevant to PET which also serve as a teaching session and review session for interesting/complex cases.
To be flexible to provide a high-quality service for patients accessing the service during usual hours of operation (includes evenings and some weekends)
To liaise as required with other imaging teams to optimise pathways for patients.
To work with medical, Allied Health Professional (AHP), nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high quality performance against clinical and financial Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
All staff are expected to take part in clinical governance activity, including clinical audit, clinical guideline and protocol development, and clinical risk management. They will be expected to produce evidence of their contribution in these areas as part of their annual appraisal.
All consultants are expected to contribute to the management and development of their clinical service.
Medical Staff Management
The post-holder will:
Work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors hours are compliant in line with European Working Time Directive (EWTD) and New Deal.
Participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.
Participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
Governance
The post-holder will:
Review clinical outcomes and complications in the designated area of PET Imaging in conjunction with the PET Clinical Lead using external benchmarking data where applicable to identify and advise variances to the Clinical Lead.
Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and ensure resulting actions are implemented.
Work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and service developments as delegated by the Clinical Director, Clinical Lead or senior management teams.
Participate in ensuring NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented and monitored in the speciality areas.
Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.
Keep fully informed about best practice in the speciality areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Head of the PET Centre or Clinical Lead.
Be a role model of good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.
Review research proposals submitted to the PET Centre as part of the Research Review Committee as required
Maintain Good Clinical Practice and other certifications to participate and lead research
Leadership and Team Working
The post-holder will:
Demonstrate excellent leadership skills regarding individual performance, clinical teams, the University and Trust, and when participating in national or local initiatives.
Work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Kings Health Partners as required.

Communication & networking
The post-holder will:
Represent KCL at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Head of the PET Centre or Clinical Lead.
Represent KCL at appropriate research networks/research meetings and congresses, as delegated by the Head of Research Department of ICAB / Head of School / Head of the PET Centre.
Communicate effectively with other clinicians regarding care of patients.
Communicate effectively with patients.
Communicate effectively with clinical and research staff within the School of BMEIS.
Establish and/or maintain links to leading PET Centres nationally and internationally.
Accept and assume a role as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Decision making, planning & problem solving
The post-holder will:
Assist fellow clinicians in the evaluation of clinical problems.
Address research questions and deliver on research grants and programmes.
Support clinical fellows, including ensuring that they are present to provide a full working service at all times. This includes management of study and annual leave.
Develop and disseminate guidelines resulting from problem resolution.
Assist and advise other researchers in the planning and execution of their research.
Service delivery
The post-holder will:
Work closely with the rest of the Imaging team and facility managers, including senior academics and clinicians, radiographers/technologists, clinical research fellows, researchers and research nurses, to undertake individual assigned responsibilities to ensure the smooth and safe running of services.
Comply with all KCL and Trust mandatory training.
Contribute to the training of all KCL and NHS staff employees as required.
Contribute to audit, service delivery and service development within KCL and the Trust.
Implement new scanning protocols safely and in compliance with Trust and KCL policies, procedures and guidelines.
Contribute to representing the department on relevant committees.
Adhere to KCL and Trust policies.
Team-work, teaching & learning support
The post-holder will:
Participate in teaching at postgraduate level.
Participate in the training of undergraduates.
Contribute to the teaching and supervision of trainee clinicians and scientists and other members of the PET Imaging team, at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Participate in the training of trainees.
Contribute to the induction and training of new staff and visiting researchers.
Facilitate and coordinate clinical fellow training in compliance with the requirements of the London Deanery and the Royal College.
This is a full-time (10 programmed activities, PA) appointment with 4 clinical, 5 research/teaching, and 1 supporting professional (SPA) PAs. There is some opportunity for additional reporting outside of core hours via established Departmental schemes that involve additional payments or time off in lieu but no formal on-call commitment. There may be additional programmed activities with agreement with the Head of PET Centre/Head of Research Department/Clinical Lead, which will be assessed annually at the time of appraisal. The College/Trust support the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) and mentoring as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Radiology and are committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. GSTT has the required arrangements in place, as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Radiology, to ensure that all doctors have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports doctors going through the revalidation process. The job plan will be negotiated between the consultant and his/her Clinical Director and Head of Research Department and the Head of PET Centre at least annually.
