Job description

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a key role in setting up, managing and developing the computing infrastructure for the new total body PET medical imaging facility that is being established at St Thomas Hospital following the award of a £13 million grant from the Medical Research Council as part of a new national PET research initiative.

Your responsibilities will include client and server system administration, dealing with hardware, software and networking issues, software licensing, data backups, virtualisation technologies and more.

The computer and clinical systems in the School are deployed on two networks, one administered by KCL and one by the GSTT (Guys and St Thomas NHS Trust). As most of the data collected and processed in the division is of sensitive nature, it must be handled in accordance with the relevant clinical governance and data protection procedures.

The successful candidate is expected to have expertise and experience on installation and configuration of Linux/Unix and Windows operating systems and associated infrastructure and services (both clients and servers); A good knowledge of network and internet protocols, including network security; Knowledge of Unix and/or Windows shell scripting language and to have extensive post-training systems administration and networking experience; Experience of Mac OSX will be beneficial; Ideally you will have worked in a clinical environment and have experience in the management of medical images and data.

The post holder is expected to be a proactive individual, able to work both independently and as part of a team and able to lead on small/medium IT projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an applicant willing to learn new skills and share knowledge with other members of the team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Liaise with clinical, technical, administrative, and scientific staff and with clinical collaborators and industrial suppliers/collaborators.
  • Undertake other tasks and responsibilities appropriate to the position as necessary, including working flexible hours if required.
  • The role will require the post holder to be physically on site for most of the working time.
  • Assess, understand and identify solutions to complex technical problems, and help both users and junior member of staff providing support and monitoring the effectiveness of the services deployed.
  • Lead on small and medium IT projects, organising your own work and that of other members of the IT team, and coordinating with stakeholder to deliver successfully and on time.
  • Manage data in compliance with GDPR and other relevant regulations, and following best practice and encouraging users to do the same.
