Our Wellbeing team provides appropriate support, signposting and intervention for students experiencing emotional and / or psychological distress, or significant personal difficulties that may impede their engagement, success, and progression.
Main duties of the job
As the main point of contact for our students at evenings and weekends, the Duty Wellbeing Adviser provides an immediate response in support for students experiencing emotional, psychological, or mental health difficulties.
We are looking for talented individuals who demonstrate excellent communication skills, and work sensitively, empathetically, and calmly with people that are experiencing distress or are in crisis. This role may also involve liaison with the on-campus security team, university accommodation providers, local hospitals, and the police.
We are looking for applications from people with a proven clinical background, and experience in mental health/clinical practice, and/or supporting people in crisis or in challenging situations.
The post holder will work across all sites in the University. As this role mainly supports students outside of core working hours it will include a range of shifts on a rotational basis.

Working
as part of the wider Student Support Service Team, the Student Support Duty Wellbeing
Adviser will report to the Wellbeing and Counselling Manager and will work in
parallel with the other Student Support Managers. The Duty Wellbeing Adviser will
be expected to liaise with other Heads of Service, the Director of Student
Experience and Support and other key stakeholders across the University.
As the
main point of contact for our students over evenings and weekends, the Duty
Wellbeing Adviser will be responsible for responding to immediate student needs
when they find themselves in crisis or distress. The postholder will be providing an immediate
response for support for students experiencing emotional, psychological, or mental
health difficulties. The post holder
will be expected to respond in a timely manner and work in partnership with internal
and external stakeholders to provide a rapid, high-quality, and supportive student
experience. This role may also involve liaison with the on-campus security
team, university accommodation providers, local hospitals, and the police. The post holder will be expected to work in any
of the sites across the University. The working pattern will include a range of shifts on a
rotational basis between the hours of 8am and 8pm Monday Sunday.
Responsibilities
Provide
face to face, on campus support for students in crisis or in challenging
situations during evenings and weekends on the University campus.
Provide
safe, ethical, and effective standards of intervention for students that need immediate
help or support.
Demonstrate excellent communication and negotiation
skills, with a proven ability to work sensitively, empathetically, and calmly with
people that are experiencing distress or are in crisis.
Use
your experience, expertise, and sound judgement to provide risk assessment,
case management and clinical leadership in difficult decision-making situations/
clinical dilemmas.
Foster
a culture of collaborative working across professional services and School
teams, providing professional advice and/ or support in relation to student
wellbeing where appropriate.
Work
collaboratively with other areas of the University to maintain a safe, supportive,
and healthy student campus.
To
signpost and support students in connecting with other student support services
such as Report and Support, Counselling and Wellbeing services, Money Advice
and Funding, Disability Inclusion Service, the on campus medical centre and
more.
Provide
a comprehensive, factual, and clear handover to the next Duty Wellbeing Adviser
on shift including details of cases received, the action that has been taken
and next steps required.
Perform
any other duties appropriate to the grade as may be required by the Head of
Student Support, Student Support Managers or Director of Student Experience and
Support.
Comply
with the personal health and safety responsibilities specified in the
University Health and Safety policy.
Engage
with the Universitys commitment to put our students first and deliver services
which are customer orientated, represent value for money and contribute to the
financial and environmental sustainability of the University when undertaking
