Job summary

The Student Health Emotion Regulation Pathway (SHERPA) at the University of Bristol Students Health Service is seeking to recruit a Clinical Psychologist/ Psychological therapist for 12-month period of maternity leave cover.

Main duties of the job

The role will involve working closely alongside the SHERPA team which includes a clinical lead psychologist, trainee psychologists and community psychiatric nurses to deliver psychological assessment, formulation and evidence-based treatment to students with complex mental health issues. The majority of the referred students have issues such as self-harm, suicide risk, diagnoses of personality disorder or similar levels of complexity. It will involve being part of a close, supportive and friendly primary care practice clinical team of GPs, nurses, and other allied health professionals within a university based primary care service.

The role would be suitable for a HCPC registered practitioner psychologist who has experience in delivering group therapies, particularly Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), to young people.

About us

Although the role requires the post holder to be physically onsite at the Students Health Service, the 0.4 WTE can be worked flexibly across the week, so may be especially attractive to applicants with family responsibilities, care commitments or who are potentially balancing this role with another post.

Job responsibilities

Support the management and operation of the Student Health Emotion Regulation Pathway (SHERPA), an in house psychology pathway for students with complex mental health issues referred by the GPs at Students Health Service.

To undertake assessment, formulation and treatment for a specialist caseload involving high risk and complex mental health presentations.

Act as specialist mental health professional (at doctoral level or equivalent) in a unique service working with personality disorder or complex mental health needs.

Undertake the role of lead facilitator for therapeutic groups held as part of SHERPA.

Managerial and supervisory oversight for assistant psychology practitioners.

Liaise with other Student Services teams, academic departments and NHS GPs and Secondary Care Mental Health Services personnel as appropriate.

Managing risk within this complex patient group.

Keep accurate records using EMIS GP NHS system.

Facilitate data collection and audit of SHERPA constant evaluation of service delivery and outcomes reporting to Lead Psychologist and Student Health Service.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Postgraduate qualification and experience as a Mental Health Profession (e.g. Doctorate in Clinical Psychology).
  • Registration with relevant professional body (e.g. HCPC)

Desirable

  • Practitioner Psychologist Qualification (e.g. DClinPsy, DCounsPsy).
  • Additional postgraduate qualifications and training (e.g. CBT, DBT, CAT etc.)
  • Prior experience of managing junior staff or teams.
  • Experience working within Higher Education.

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience (>2 years) working clinically with young people with emotional dysregulation/ personality disorders/ self-harm.
  • Highly proficient in group work, and experience of leading and running group programmes.
  • Competence in psychotherapies relevant to the defined patient group, e.g. DBT/ Mentalisation Based Therapy/ CAT or similar etc.
  • Proactive approach to identifying and managing risk
  • Experience of working in successful or high achieving multidisciplinary teams.
  • Awareness of NICE/ QOF other national/ local clinical guidelines.
  • Experience of dealing with high pressure workload, and ability to prioritise work.
