The posts are funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) to develop future clinician scientists in neonatal medicine or in global perinatal neuroscience

Main duties of the job

To lead and undertake research of the highest quality in the broad area of perinatal neuroscience; * Leading the development trial protocols providing intellectual input and supervising all aspects of day-to-day management of the COMET trial including regulatory approvals and amendments, and development of manual of operations * Case recruitment and MR imaging from Imperial NHS Trust and liaising with the recruiting centres alongside the neonatal neurology research nurses * Organising trial steering committee meetings and liaising with the data safety monitoring committee * Attend and present work at international conferences

About us

The Centre for Perinatal Neuroscience within the Department of Brain Sciences is led by Professor Sudhin Thayyil and hosts one of the largest clinical research programs on neonatal encephalopathy in the world. Our work is focussed on prevention and treatment of neonatal encephalopathy and have direct health policy relevance. We have conducted some of the largest studies in the world on neonatal encephalopathy including Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Neonatal Encephalopathy (MARBLE study) (Lancet Neurology 2019) (BAPM guidelines 2020); Hypothermia for Encephalopathy in low and middle-income countries (HELIX) trial, Lancet Global Health 2021, JAMA Network 2023. Our group was first in the world to explain the biological mechanisms of neonatal encephalopathy using gene expression studies, and to highlight the hazards of therapeutic drift in use of induced hypothermia. We recently completed the world's largest study on birth related brain injury recruiting 80,000 mothers and babies from India (NIHR RIGHT program) and is currently conducting the world's largest clinical trial of early and extended erythropoietin neuroprotection in neonatal encephalopathy (EMBRACE) in South Asia. We work closely with the engineering group at Imperial College London (Prof Aldo Faisal) on developing multimodal artificial intelligence predictive models using clinical, EEG and MR imaging data from these studies.

Job responsibilities

About the role We are looking for two enthusiastic Clinical Research Fellows in Neonatal Medicine to work on an exciting NIHR funded projects in the field of neonatal medicine. You will be supervised by Professor Sudhin Thayyil, based in the Centre for Perinatal Neuroscience, working with world leading experts in one of the largest clinical research programs on birth related brain injury (neonatal encephalopathy) in the world. What you would be doing Post 1 is a 3-year doctoral post, where you would lead a clinical trial of whole-body hypothermia for mild encephalopathy (COMET). You will work directly with the trial team and be responsible for all aspects of the trial under the chief investigator. You will lead site initiations and conduct assessment outcomes. Post 2 is a 1-year pre-doctoral post, where you will work in one or more of the ongoing research programs at the Centre for Perinatal Neuroscience. You will have the opportunity to develop data for a doctoral fellowship application. What we are looking for We are looking for passionate and committed early career paediatricians who wish to explore a combined clinical and research career as a clinician scientist and to make a big difference to babies with birth related brain injury. You should have a degree in medicine (MBBS) and prior experience of working in paediatrics and neonatal medicine. Previous research and experience in various neonatal imaging techniques is desirable, but not essential. You will receive training in various aspects of clinical trials and neonatal brain research including development of publications and grants and access to the various training programs organised by the Imperial Clinical Academic Training Office and NIHR Global Health Training programs. You will have access to a generous research training and travel bursary, and will be eligible to apply for a self-funded PhD fee with discounted fees, if required. What we can offer you
