Job summary

As a member of the Universitys Students, Support and Information Service team, the post holder will provide a nursing service for students across both our campuses. The post holder will work closely with other colleagues within the Wellbeing team.

The Nurse Health Adviser will provide an approachable University health support service which is accessible to all students and will take a pro-active approach to health education within the University community, to include planning and delivering health promotion and providing general advice to students, both individually and in groups, on health-related matters.

Main duties of the job

A qualified Nurse (RGN or equivalent), with demonstrable experience of working with young people, you will liaise closely with the team to assess and support students at risk and formulate individual support plans, collaborating with external agencies to offer a broad range of provision to students. With proven organisational skills and strong written and verbal communication skills, the post holder will provide supporting evidence for the mitigation process as well as undertaking risk assessments and updating and reviewing University health policies.

Job responsibilities

Based at Bishop Otter Campus, Chichester and the Universitys coastal campus at Bognor Regis, but required to work at any centre where University business is conducted that is within reasonable distance of the campus base.

Function of the Post:As a member of the Universitys Students, Support and Information Service team, the post holder will provide a nursing service for students at the Bishop Otter Campus (BOC) and the Bognor Regis Campus (BRC). The post holder will work closely with other colleagues within the Wellbeing team.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Provide an approachable University health support service which is accessible to all students and take a pro-active approach to health education within the University community, to include planning and delivering health promotion and providing general advice to students both individually and in groups on health-related matters.
  2. Liaise closely with other members of the Student Wellbeing, Disability and Dyslexia team and the wider Directorate including the Accommodation team to promote health and well-being and provide holistic support for students, and identify and support students who may be at risk.
  3. As part of Student Wellbeing team identify and support students with safeguarding concerns and be familiar with the Universitys Safeguarding and Prevent policy, attending relevant associated training.
  4. Assess students who may be at risk and, in liaison with colleagues, engage with fitness to study/practise process if appropriate.
  5. As a registered nurse work within the NMC Code of Professional standards of practice and behaviour for nurses, midwives and nursing associates. Ensure professional development and engage with the revalidation process and maintain professional registration and undertake regular clinical supervision.
  6. Work closely with local GP surgeries to encourage student registration and refer as appropriate.
  7. Formulate individual support plans with the student to provide a resource for the student regarding their responsibilities and role in managing their health. With consent, share this plan appropriately to ensure availability of resource. If necessary provide further information about condition and treatment on request. Provide advice and support in liaison with disability services, to students with disclosed health conditions, both chronic and acute.
  8. Provide support to students whose ability to study is impacted by health issues. Provide information regarding the Mitigation process and if appropriate provide evidence in support of their application.
  9. In liaison with the Disability team and Travel Plan, engage with students with health conditions who have appealed to park on campus. Provide advice and, if appropriate evidence, in support of an appeal.
  10. Create and review relevant University health policies such as meningitis and notifiable disease policies and procedures to ensure these are up to date and in line with best practice.
  11. When appropriate liaise with outside agencies, and network with other universities to ensure that the University is in line with best practice and compliant with local and national health law. Liaise with local sexual health services to ensure guidance and advice is up to date. Collaborate where possible on joint strategies aimed at the student community to promote positive sexual health.
  12. Support students who disclose alleged sexual assault. Informing them of external and internal reporting options and supporting them through these processes if required. Liaise with statutory services with the students consent if required, following University Policy and processes.
  13. Provide risk assessments for pregnant students who wish to engage, to support them to confidently continue their studies.
  14. Liaise closely with the University and SUs Health and Safety Officers and work with local and national agencies to enhance and inform support for students.
