Job summary

Park House School is seeking a psychologist passionate about the needs of young people with Autism and challenging behaviour. The school has an excellent reputation with key stakeholders for pupil centre education and care, and is a highly sought after placement for parents and local authorities.

Park House School is a special day school for young people aged 6-19 who have a diagnosis of Autism or Aspergers, challenging behaviour and other associated difficulties. Park House School aims to provide an outstanding therapeutic and educational environment for every young person on role. There are 24 pupils on role with varying levels of learning needs, from young people with severe learning disabilities to pupils taking formal exams include GCSE and A-levels.

Job Role

You will be part of an established multi-disciplinary team that is led by the head of therapy and includes a speech and language therapist, an occupational therapist, assistant psychologists, teachers and key-workers. As a member of the therapy team, the post-holder will be expected to contribute to service development at the school and network with other psychologists within the region to continually improve service provision.

This role is term time only, with an activities week in August

Main duties of the job

Candidate Profile

You will need to be a clear communicator, well-organised, confident and capable of managing a complex caseload in a demanding environment.

Experience of supervising others and providing training to multi-disciplinary staff is desirable.

The role will involve the assessment and formulation of the psychological and behavioural needs of the young people, and provision of indirect or direct intervention with young people, their family carers and the team around them within school.

The post will be line managed by the Head of Therapy and clinical supervision will be provided by one of the Directors who is a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist.

Learning Disability and/or CAMHS experience desirable.

Full induction training is given. You will also learn from some of the most dedicated and inspirational people and just like our young people you will be learning all the time through our on-going mentoring and support.

The role of the Psychologist

To provide expert knowledge and support within the service to the wider school team, taking the lead on defined projects.

To supervise and mentor others, providing leadership and support, including supervision and continuing professional development to Assistant Psychologists and education staff, where appropriate.

Particular Responsibilities

Clinical:

1. To exercise professional judgment and responsibility for the psychological management of children and young people including assessment and reporting, formulation, intervention, discharge and effective communication of these plans with other professionals involved in the care of the young person.

2. To undertake psychologically based risk assessments and, in conjunction with the wider team, provide risk management for individual children and young people, and to provide advice on the psychological aspects of risk assessment and management to other professions

3. To provide consultation support and informal supervision to wider staff team, when required

4. To support provision of education and therapy in the best interest of the young person through liaison with families and external professionals as required.

5. To communicate highly effectively, adapting style to diversity of audience, demonstrating excellence in both written and verbal skills, contributing to internal and external meetings as required and supporting effective multi-disciplinary working.

6. To demonstrate a professional and ethical value base, as set out in the BPS Code of Ethics and HCPC Standard of Conduct, Performance and Ethics.

Management, recruitment and development:

1. To provide appropriate professional guidance and clinical supervision to Assistant Psychologists as required.

2. To support the Principal and Head of Therapy in the recruitment of Assistant Psychologists and other staff as required.

3. To proactively develop public relations and marketing activities across the region, contributing to developing healthy constructive relationships with regulatory bodies and funders with management and promoting the reputation of Park House School.

4. To receive regular clinical supervision and line management supervision according to good practice and HCPC guidelines.

5. To provide training in relevant psychological presentations and approaches, signposting to other training opportunities as required.

6. To be responsible for managing own CPD, actively seeking out opportunities and regularly attending CPD events, both internal and external where possible, demonstrating development in clinical and management skills, and self-awareness in critically reflecting on own practice.

IT responsibilities:

To have IT training and skills to be able to use the computer for e-mails, business and clinical documents, analysis and information research.

Research and service evaluation:

1. To lead on the design and implementation of audit/research project.

2. To effectively monitor and evidence the input and impact of the psychology provision offered to young people.

3. To undertake data collection, analysis, the production of reports and summaries, using IT and statistical programmes.
