We are seeking to appoint an academic lead for Problem-Based Learning (PBL) to support the on-going delivery of the graduate entry MBChB programme within the Three Counties Medical School (TCMS) at the University of Worcester.

Ideally you will already have experience of teaching medical students or similar. However, key to the role is an interest in developing as a medical educator and the ability to work flexibly with the rest of the team to meet the needs of the MBChB curriculum. There are also opportunities for professional development.

The post is based at the Severn campus.

Main duties of the job

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is passionate about Healthcare Education to join the TCMS team. Applicants will have a keen interest in medical education and training, with a good understanding of the seven-step PBL process to provide the necessary pedagogic expertise and academic leadership. Working with the Phase Leads to ensure the MBChB programme curriculum is supported in respect of problem-based learning, you will make a significant contribution towards designing and developing learning materials and assessment, as well as contributing to the delivery of a high-quality experience for medical students. Applicants are expected to have a track record of research in a relevant field and engage in research and scholarship.

The Schools MBChB curriculum is centred around problem-based learning (PBL), applied learning (e.g. simulation), with an emphasis on early patient contact and community-orientated clinical placements. Founded with the aim of widening access to careers in medicine and retaining graduates in the local area, the school opened to students in September 2023.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To lead the development of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and provide academic leadership for the PBL Facilitators, strengthening working links between them and other members of the Medical School academic staff.

2. To design and deliver on-going training and NHS Tutor preparation to ensure the aims of the Medical School MBChB are appropriately delivered.

3. To develop the PBL Facilitators, identifying and addressing staff development needs; and to liaise with the NHS Site Leads in identifying the learning needs of our clinical tutors and collaborating in delivering educational continuing professional development as related to the delivery of the MBChB.

4. To have responsibility for the continued development of the Medical School approach to PBL including appropriate innovation.

5. To support the development of the content and quality of the Medical School PBL curriculum in conjunction with the Phase 1 Lead and to liaise with colleagues in Phase 2 to ensure consistency of pedagogical approach.

6. To be responsible for the design and production of suitable learning materials in consultation with Phase Leads.

7. To provide advice and support for issues relating to student support arising on a day-to- day basis in the PBL, liaising with the MBChB Student Support & Guidance Lead.

8. To supervise the Medical School PBL Facilitators to ensure appropriate delivery of PBL in accordance with the requirements of the MBChB Programme.

9. To lead on the recruitment, development, training and appraisal of the PBL facilitator team.

10. To work with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across the College of Health, Life and Environmental Science for PBL as required, to ensure that interdisciplinary learning is embedded within the Medical School.

11. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurances procedures.

12. To undertake the duties of a PBL facilitator, as required.

13. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees and working groups within the School and College.

14. To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.

15. To engage in research and scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, books and other forms appropriate to the discipline.

16. To develop and / or collaborate on funding bids for research and / or knowledge exchange.

17. To develop impact of their research, through engagement with key stakeholders and research users / beneficiaries.

18. To participate fully in the life of the school and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.

19. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

20. Take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and well-being and that of other staff and students.
