Initially based in the Medical School you will be responsible for ensuring our healthcare courses' curricula follow regulator guidance, for example, aligning with the General Medical Council's Medical Licensing Assessment. You will have opportunities to contribute to designing new courses across the University, prepare innovative teaching and learning resources, and assessments.

Main duties of the job

You will contribute to the delivery of a high-quality student experience, working with colleagues across the University as appropriate, including the MBChB programme, Three Counties Medical School and College of Health and Science. Applicants are expected to have a track record of working in Higher Education and engage in research and scholarship.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. To be responsible for the development, organisation and supervision of the learning of Pharmacology including how drugs and medicines affect biological systems within the human body and drug interactions to students on relevant degree programmes across College of Health and Science and / or the University.

2. To contribute to the delivery of a high-quality student experience for students on relevant degree programmes, including developing new courses, working with the appropriate Leads to ensure courses are supported in respect of relevant disciplines.

3. In consultation with the appropriate Course Lead, to design and produce learning resources in pharmacology sciences, maximising the use of technology, and demonstrating appropriate and innovative pedagogic approaches to support learning including safe prescribing to the specified Medical Licensing Assessment, Prescribing Safely Assessment or other required professional standards.

4. To make a significant contribution to teaching and assessments including preparing students for any national prescribing assessments.

5. To undertake the full range of teaching duties, module leadership, research project supervision and other administrative duties commensurate with the post and grade

6. To work with undergraduate and postgraduate courses across the College of Health and Science to ensure the successful delivery of biomedical and pharmacological sciences and to ensure that interdisciplinary learning is embedded.

7. To contribute to the assessment process for students including the setting, marking and moderation of work, individually or collectively as part of a team in accordance with quality assurance procedures, including taking on assessment leadership in due course.

8. To take part in the day-to-day management of teaching and learning and to support the continued development of pharmacology and safe prescribing within relevant programmes.

9. To engage in research and scholarship, disseminating findings through conference presentations and journal articles, books, book chapters and other forms appropriate to the discipline.

10. To supervise doctoral students in their discipline as appropriate.

11. To develop and / or collaborate on funding bids for research and / or knowledge exchange.

12. To develop the impact of their research, through engagement with key stakeholders and research users / beneficiaries.

13. To participate in the facilitation of problem-based learning as required.

14. To fulfil a highly effective personal academic tutor role, actively contributing to the process of monitoring and profiling students across the School

15. To carry out academic administrative work and participate in relevant committees within the School and College.

16. To participate in the recruitment of students, including selection events and open days.

17. To participate fully in the life of the School and carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Dean of School or their nominee.

18. Maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

  • A first degree in pharmacology or a closely related subject area.
  • PhD in Pharmacology or a closely related discipline (or for Lecturer level: near completion) and / or appropriate relevant experience.

Desirable

  • Essential for Senior Lecturer level: PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (or equivalent qualification) and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) / Advance HE* / or relevant appropriate experience.

  • Demonstrable ability to enthuse, motivate and facilitate student learning using a variety of methods of learning and teaching, including the ability to use technology creatively and appropriately to enhance learning experiences.
