Job summary

One of the best Universities for health education, Worcester is founding the distinctive Three Counties Medical School [TCMS], aiming to widen access to careers in medicine and retain graduates in the local area. The Schools planned curriculum emphasises problem-based learning [PBL], early patient contact, programmatic assessment, an emphasis on community-orientated clinical placements and professional, emotionally intelligent communication at every stage.

The University of Worcester is seeking Associate Lecturers - PBL Facilitator to join its expanding Medical School.

Main duties of the job

As a PBL Facilitator, you will provide small group facilitation for first year medical students, who will meet in small groups to explore and discuss authentic clinical case scenarios. You will also need to undertake the necessary preparation for facilitating small group work and tutorials including PBL scenario refreshment and tutor notes, as well as assessing student progress, providing constructive and timely feedback. PBL facilitators may also act as the students Personal Academic Tutors (PAT) providing student academic guidance, mentorship and pastoral support.

PBL Facilitators meet with groups of students on Monday afternoons and Friday mornings over 35 weeks.

2. To use the appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.

3. To assess the progress of students both formatively and summatively with reference to the assessment criteria and provide constructive and timely feedback to students.

4. To undertake the necessary preparation for facilitating small group work and tutorials, including introductory training, and reading of documentation (Facilitators Notes).

5. To contribute to PBL scenario refreshment and the tutor notes.

6. To provide student guidance, mentorship, and pastoral support as a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT).

7. To contribute to the quality assurance processes and the evaluation of the MBChB programme.

8. To attend pertinent staff development and in house training activities as required by the role including PAT and take part in peer teaching observation and dialogue.

9. To maintain personal and professional development to meet the changing demands of the job; participate in appropriate training activities and encourage and support staff in their development and training.

10. To take steps to ensure and enhance personal health, safety, and wellbeing and that of other staff and students.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex and conceptual ideas to a range of different audiences.
  • Ability to facilitate student learning using non-didactic techniques.
  • Demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion and to the health and wellbeing of staff and students.
  • Good IT skills and working knowledge of MS Word packages.
  • A commitment to medical education and developing future doctors.

Experience

Essential

  • Knowledge, experience, and expertise in an appropriate medical / healthcare or scientific discipline to enable the successful facilitation of PBL groups with medical students.
  • Knowledge of contemporary teaching methods, preferably PBL and / or small group teaching, facilitation, and critical appraisal.
  • Experience of giving constructive, formative feedback to others in the workplace, (ideally providing feedback to students).
  • Understanding of the pastoral and academic support requirements of medical students (ideally some experience of providing such support).

Qualifications

  • Registration with the GMC, NMC, HCPC (or a PhD or equivalent level qualification in biomedical science subject or another relevant discipline).
  • A good first degree (Level 6) in a relevant discipline.

Desirable

  • Post Graduate Qualification in Medical Education or equivalent such as PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in HE and / or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (HEA)*.
