Job summary

The NHS Lung Cancer Screening Programme (LCSP) offers all smokers or former smokers aged between 55-74 a Lung Health Check (LHC), and those identified as high risk of lung cancer a low-dose CT scan (LDCT). By the end of March 2025, over 2.5 million people had been invited to a LHC, over 1.2 million people had attended a LHC, and over 750,000 LDCTs had been performed (first and follow-up). This has resulted in over 7,000 cancers being diagnosed, 75% at Stage 1 or 2.

It is expected that the LCSP will be fully rolled out across England to all those eligible by 2029/2030 at which point it will transition to become an NHS cancer screening programme.

NHS England is now looking to recruit a new Clinical Lead Radiologist for the LCSP who alongside the programme team will support delivery of the programme. The Clinical Lead Radiologist will work alongside the Clinical Lead Respiratory Consultant.

  • Leading and contributing to the quality assurance workstream of the programme, including providing ad hoc clinical advice for incidents
  • Ensuring appropriate training is delivered to radiologists
  • Where required, supporting regional teams, Cancer Alliances and sites in delivering their local programme and encouraging collaborative working with other sites.
  • Active participation in collaborative opportunities within the programme, gathering intelligence and insight as well as providing support at events and in the development of appropriate resources
  • Combining clinical expertise with operational knowledge, converting delivery and operational findings into clinical learning.
  • Working with PHE, Royal Colleges, Lung Cancer Clinical Expert Group (CEG), reporting houses, Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Macmillan and professional bodies to build the evidence of lung health checks across England.
