NHSE's Data and Analytics Directorate is on a mission to support the NHS in becoming data-enabled over the next 10 years. Our vision is to empower patients with control over their data and care, provide clinicians, decision-makers, and researchers with access to trusted, real-time, and high-quality data, and support the NHS Data Community in applying their skills to high-value opportunities. We are seeking an Assistant Director of Data Architecture to lead the development & evolution of our data architecture estate, enabling the NHS to unlock the power of data. As the AD of Data Architecture, the post holder will lead and work as part of a dynamic team to deliver an effective data architecture service. This role involves supporting staff in developing robust and scalable data architectures that facilitate insights and data-driven decision-making. The individual will provide strategic direction to ensure projects and work packages align with the goals and ambitions of the NHS; have experience in developing data architectures & leading a team that champions the use of data architecture to improve policy, analysis, and research and will also ensure that all local initiatives align with the directorate's ambitions within the data architecture field.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have accountability and responsibility for the strategic and operational development of the data architecture function. Plans to achieve the strategy will be underpinned by the delivery of short to medium-term objectives.

Key aspects of this role include:

  • Ensuring the policy on data architecture is understood by all stakeholders and delivered using all available resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Providing leadership for the Data Architecture team and championing the use of data architecture across the system to improve policy, analysis, research, and care.
  • Owning key technical decisions and the roadmap for Data Architecture in NHS England.
  • Ensuring the development and management of relevant policies, guidelines, and best practices for data architecture.
  • Ensuring appropriate systems and processes are in place to enable the successful delivery of data architectures.
  • Proactively managing key risks and issues, ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond.
  • Monitoring and establishing accountability for the overall progress of data architecture projects and services to ensure completion within agreed timescales.
  • Managing and actively promoting relationships with stakeholders

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
