Job summary

The Postgraduate Dental Dean is an important & influential post both locally & nationally delivering a wide range of education & training, national policy across the dental professions, aligned with the organisation's mandate & national workforce strategy for the dental profession. The Dental Dean will be expected to support the work of the COPDEND & where relevant, work with the Office of the Chief Dental Officer, Higher Education Institutions & Integrated Care Boards.

The Dental Dean has statutory obligations in relation to Dental Foundation Training & Dental Specialist Lists. There are additional expectations of Dental Deans explicit in the delivery of health care regulation by the General Dental Council, Department of Health & the Care Quality Commission.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the multiprofessional dental team in the north east & north Cumbria.
  • Promoting the development of the dental team to meet new ways of working, including skill mix in line with Scope of Practice defined by the General Dental Council
  • Encouraging & supporting initiatives aimed at improving the quality of dental care, including appraisal, peer review and clinical audit.
  • The efficient and satisfactory delivery of educational courses to support dentists new or returning to the NHS to understand working in the UK & NHS as necessary, to underpin safe & effective patient care & to meet the NHS Performers List Regulations & other relevant legislation
  • Up to a max of 8 PAs are available for this role

Main duties of the job

The Postgraduate Dental Dean for the north east and north Cumbria will support the Regional Postgraduate Dean to work across the spectrum of Postgraduate Dental training.

The role will include providing significant leadership to work on developing strategic dental educational frameworks to support effective multi-professional training to the regional dental workforce in both primary and secondary settings.

The postholder will be an advocate for dental and oral health education by being a positive role model that inspires, motivates and empowers whilst demonstrating NHS values. A key element of this role will be the ability to collaborate with stakeholders including the regional Integrated Care Board and local education and service providers.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
