Job summary
NHS England - South East Region Medical Directorate wishes to appoint a Professional Standards Manager. The post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting colleagues across the Performance, National Performers List and Appraisal and Revalidation Sectors.
The Professional Standards Team is responsible for ensuring high quality and safe primary care services by managing any concerns relating to primary care practitioners. Our priority is patient safety, and by working with primary care practitioners we endeavour to maintain the provision of safe clinical services to patients.
As a Professional Standards Manager you will manage a team of professional standards officers, and work closely with clinical advisors and other professionals.
Responsible for providing advice and support to panel members at the Professional Standards Group (PSG) and the Performer List Decision Panel (PLDP). Supporting the drafting of decision letters, ensuring compliance with the regulations.
Being able to manage difficult conversations with practitioners, providing support and advice about the management of concerns.
As a Professional Standards Manager you will lead and have oversight of all suspension processes. Liaising with practitioners and case managers to ensure claims are made in a timely manner, and they are assessed in line with the determinations and policies. Monthly eligibility checks are undertaken.
Main duties of the job
The post holder understands patient safety risks and priorities workload accordingly; assessing risk and ensuring that actions are taken to mitigate risk.
Interpretation and management of concerns in accordance with Managing the NHS Performers Lists policy, the NHS Performers Lists Regulations and the Responsible Officer Regulations for concerns relating to GPs, Dentists and Ophthalmic Practitioners, ensure the mitigation of risk when interpreting and enacting aspects of those Regulations.
Working with primary care practitioners whose performance gives rise for concern.
Receipt of highly complex, sensitive or continuous information, negotiating with senior stakeholders and controversial issues, presenting complex and sensitive information to large and influential groups.
The use of NHS England software to support the management of primary care performers lists, performer concerns and medical appraisal; Revalidation Management System, Athena, PCSE Portal, Compass, RMS
They will be required to collate information, including statements, read and prioritise complex information, and draft reports relating to their findings.
The post holder will demonstrate confidence and corporate perspective in dealing with Fitness for Purpose issues in day to day relationships with stakeholders.
Experience of managing and motivating a team/virtual team and reviewing performance of the individuals
Experience of managing difficult conversations and complex queries.

The Professional Standards Team (whose functions include Performance, Appraisal and Revalidation and National Performers Lists Management) is responsible for ensuring high quality and safety of primary care services by managing any concerns relating to primary care practitioners across the three (GPs, dentists, and opticians) independent contractor groups.
The Responsible Officer (RO) Regulations provide an unprecedented degree of leverage to ensure the quality of medical staff and safety of care across all NHS and independent sector providers. The Professional Standards Team ensures that recommendations for Revalidation are completed appropriately.
The Professional Standards Team carries out all functions associated with the Responsible Officer (RO) Regulations and support the RO in making recommendations to the GMC regarding the revalidation of NHS GPs.
The National Performers List is a statutory process where registered primary care practitioners providing primary care in England must be included on the list.
The performance of GPs, Dentists and Ophthalmic Practitioners is managed through the Performers List Regulations, RO Regulations and NHS England policies.
Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
