Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the training programme team at Northumbria GP Training Programme. We are a flexible and innovative training programme and are seeking a highly motivated educator to join our team, helping to train the GP workforce of the future. A key area of work is to contribute to the organisation and delivery of the regional teaching programme at the Coach Lane campus site and provide support to those doctors in training who receive their teaching there. Main duties of the job

Strategic functions

Assisting the LTPD in advising the PCD of the Postgraduate School of Primary Care in the development of overall strategy and policy for development of the GP workforce

General Practice Training functions

  • Assisting the LTPD in designing implementing and monitoring systems within the designated Training Programme for:
.Organising and delivering the taught course to trainees

.Organisation and supervision of specialty training programmes

.Support to doctors in difficulty, including early warning, needs assessment and support to trainers of such doctors

.Training the workforce (GP Educationalists, administrative staff, GP and hospital trainers, educational and clinical supervisors, including those working in out of hours services)

.Quality Control of hospital placements

.Quality Control of GP training posts

.Providing reports for trainer accreditation

.Appraisal of GP Educationalists, administrative staff and GP trainers

.Appraisal and development of trainers

.QC of training posts

  • Pro-active involvement in ARCP and MRCGP assessment processes and procedures
  • Advising and supporting hospital and GP trainers, and especially those in difficulty
  • Quality Management of appraisal systems
  • Supporting the PCD as required to fulfil the School's agreed function.

Job responsibilities

NHS England is responsible for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Training and Education in the area between Yorkshire and Scotland, including North Cumbria. NHSE covers 11 NHS Trusts, 2 Local Area Teams (LATs), 2125 GPs (wte - 2342 head count) and 3 million patients.

Deputy Lead Training Programme Directors are responsible for implementing and maintaining high standards of Specialty Training, by creating the environment for successful GP training across NHSE. They share corporate responsibility for the overall development of GP training within NHSE and also take responsibility for contributing to and leading, as required, any specific NHSE projects. This will include liaison with the Local Area Teams (LATs), Acute Trusts, GP Practices, other regions and relevant National bodies.

They will achieve their key purpose by:

  • Being part of the senior School staff team:

.Deputising for the LTPD on School Board

.Deputising for LTPD at GP Specialty Training Executive meetings

.Running workshops at annual Educationalists Conference

.Sitting on ARCP panels

.Presenting their trainees to ARCP panels

  • Assisting the LTPD in developing the designated training programme strategy and policy
  • Assisting the LTPD in managing the designated GP Training Programme:

.Managing the educational and resource budget

.Liaising with Central Office regarding HR/ employment issues

.Problem solving allocation of GP Doctors in Training (DITs) to posts

.Assigning tasks and roles within the office and TPD team

.Supporting the business managers

.Ensuring all processes are effectively undertaken

.Recruitment of TPDs and succession planning

.Quality controlling TPDs and the taught course

.Supporting trainers in dealing with struggling GP Doctors in training

.Supporting self-directed trainer development through trainer groups

.Providing advice and support over e-portfolio, employment and other issues.

.Developing new posts

.Developing Hospital trainers

.Providing support to hospital clinical tutors

.Liaising with Trusts

  • Supporting GP Doctors in training by providing:

.Support and advice over wide variety matters: e.g., time out of programme, maternity leave and flexible training, e-portfolio and ARCP panels, career advice,

.Bespoke support to struggling GP Doctors in training based on a personal analysis of learning needs

  • Providing support to the Acute Trust Clinical Tutors
  • Taking part in annual appraisal with the LTPD or an Associate Director.
  • Demonstrating their personal learning and development as a deputy LTPD.
  • Engaging in regular, effective dialogue within the School of Primary care in order to share information on National and HNSE policy together with local factors affecting the GP Programme and hospital training posts.
  • Working collaboratively towards the common goal of recruiting, training, nurturing and retaining sufficient good doctors for a career in primary care, both locally and nationally.

Communications and Working Relationships
