Job summary

The Clinical Sustainability Nurse Specialist is a key member of the Chief Nursing Officer's Sustainability Innovation and Entrepreneurship Team, working within Quality Safety, Sustainability Innovation, and the Women's Health Directorate. The Clinical Sustainability Nurse Specialist will have a pivotal role in providing subject matter expertise in the development of the directorate's net zero clinical transformation programme and will have a significant role in contributing to the development of climate-smart care pathways within nursing and midwifery services.

Main duties of the job

The role of the clinical sustainability nurse specialist encompasses supporting the formulation of policies, strategies, and practices that contribute to the enhancement of healthcare sustainability. This includes staying abreast of current research and evidence-based practices, integrating these practices into patient care, educating and mentoring healthcare professionals, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to influence policy and practice development. It is within this context that they will support the directorate to:

1. Maximise the influence of nursing and midwifery leadership at every level in the delivery of the NHS net zero objective, integrating sustainability into clinical practice, throughout the system, and within all nursing and midwifery programmes of care.2. Expand the scope of nursing and midwifery's net-zero influence across networks, championing the integration of global sustainable development goals into our practice frameworks.3. Grow, nurture, and develop the capacity, skills, proficiency, and knowledge of nursing and midwifery in the application of sustainable quality improvement methodologies while fostering and adopting circular health innovations.

4. Amplify the contribution of nursing and midwifery to realising net zero by devising and implementing decarbonisation strategies and developing climate-smart care pathways within nursing and midwifery care models.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

  1. Advocate for and lead the establishment of a bespoke planetary health literacy programme for nursing and midwifery, which includes the creation of a specialised sustainability attributes framework.

Essential

  • Registered 1st Level Nurse and on the Live NMC Register.
  • Educated to master's level or equivalent level/ completed master's level modules or have equivalent experience working at senior nursing level in specialist area of practice or clinical leadership.
  • Demonstrate evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development in quality improvement and in sustainability.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Have at least 3 years' experience working at a senior clinical nursing level either as specialist practitioner or ward manager/deputy ward manager.
  • Have at least one years' experience in a sustainability role or leading sustainability projects or programmes in clinical setting.
  • Demonstrable experience in clinical management and/or experience in delivering education, and/or delivering quality improvement within or across care pathways.
