Job summary
We are looking for an Assistant Director of Programmes for our Regional Elective Productivity Programme to join our team and lead on the GIRFT elective care productivity and efficiency programme for the region working in partnership with key national and regional stakeholders. The post holder will lead a dynamic team to support East of England ICBs and Providers with recovery of their elective care services in line with the National Elective Care Recovery Strategy and ambitions of the Long Term Plan taking an improvement approach.
The post holder will be responsible for day-to-day leadership and delivery of the nationally and regionallyagreed priorities for the following areas
GIRFT Elective Care Hub programme
GIRFT HVLC Programme (focusing on the surgical pathways for the 6 regional HVLC specialties)
GIRFT deep dive visits where they align with regional priority clinical specialties.
GIRFT theatre productivity programme
GIRFT Perioperative Care Programme
This is a hybrid role with travel required across the East of England to support on-site visits.
This is an exciting and varied role where you will join a dynamic improvement team to influence and manage a range of high profile improvement programmes to benefit patients and support regional elective care recovery. This is a fixed term contract or secondment opportunity to September 2025.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with colleagues nationally and regionally to
- Support ICBs and Providers with the delivery of the GIRFT elective care productivity approach including the GIRFT Further Faster Programme regionally using change management skills and expertise
- identify, and communicate examples of national and regional best practice to ensure shared learning
- provide expertise relating to improvement approaches and methodologies
- bring together analysis, improvement tools and examples of best practice and innovation
- build relationships with key stakeholders regionally, within ICBs, providers and with the relevant national teams
- provide hospital on-site support for GIRFT visits.
This role requires an individual to work proactively and on their own initiative, with the ability to manage integrated programmes of work. The ability to work in a fast paced work environment with competing priorities will be a necessary requirement. Curiosity and a desire to explore how we can continuously seek to improve how we deliver our work are assets we are looking for.
The use of data and information to inform and track our work plans and impact are essential and a good working knowledge of how to use and visualise date to demonstrate progress and impact.
A good working knowledge of elective care priorities to support elective care recovery as well as demonstrable experience in the use of improvement approaches and methodologies is essential.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
