Job summary

We are recruiting for a Senior Technical Specialist to work within the Technology Services sub-directorate at NHS England.

The purpose of Technology Services is to deliverSimple, Safe and Smart Solutionsacross the NHS.

The aims ofTechnology Services are to:

  • Deliver the benefits ofcost reductionof the operating cost of technology.
  • Enable cost reduction across NHSE bystreamlining processesthat have become fossilised in legacy technologies.
  • Enablebetter decision makingin NHS England through a Modern Digital Workplace.
  • Deliver aresilient and safenational technology infrastructure across the system.

We will change the relationship with the frontline, focussing on delivering the commodity-based capabilities that are needed, building platforms and communities to enable us all to benefit from innovation, and doing so upon robust, cost-efficient platforms and infrastructure.

The purpose of Infrastructure services is toensure our services and systems are hosted effectively, securely and efficiently.We require an experienced and highly motivated Senior Technical Specialist to help us achieve this objective.

Main duties of the job

Delivers technical support and solutions for infrastructure within NHS England

Manages relationships between Infrastructure Teams and internal/external stakeholders

Supplier management to meet key performance indicators and agreed Service Levels for hosted systems

Supporting the Services hosted in the Infrastructure on-premises and cloud environments

Actively contribute to our technical and operational strategy using your specialist knowledge

Pro-actively provides input and support to high severity incidents for the multiple critical national systems and environments supporting NHS Live Services.

Manages and maintains own professional knowledge and development in their technical specialism and embraces development opportunities to support new technologies, frameworks and services including the move to Cloud.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Significant knowledge of following Release, Change, Configuration, and Incident management processes.
  • Significant understanding of business continuity procedures and solutions
  • Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of both Microsoft Windows and Linux / UNIX environments
  • Demonstrable understanding and knowledge of both On-premises and cloud environments and platforms
  • Knowledge of NHS systems
  • Knowledge and experience of Cloud based applications and engineering

Skills

Essential

  • Worked in a large ICT department with a good understanding of ITIL processes and be actively involved in Change, Incident and problem management
  • Effective time management when working on daily workloads and adherence to project timescales
  • Structured approach to troubleshooting and fault-finding including root cause analysis
  • Significant experience of working in a high-pressure enterprise scale network
  • Experience in gathering, understanding, negotiating and documenting customer requirements
  • Experience in creating detailed network design documentation in support of physical, virtual and cloud-based services supporting the following: o HP and Cisco UCS Blade and Rack-mount server hardware o EMC SAN technology including VNX and Data Domain o Windows Server family o VMWare ESX Server/Virtual Centre o TCP/IP/DNS/DHCP/WINS Network o Active Directory
