The National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) is part of NHS England Transformation Directorate, Data and Analytics. In partnership with other teams and groups within NHS England and beyond we provide the expertise to identify, collect, collate and quality-assure detailed and rich population-level datasets for specific diseases and conditions.
As a Trainee Cancer Registration Officer for the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service (NCRAS), you will learn how to undertake the abstraction of all patient, tumour and treatment data, and the appropriate coding and recording of these onto the NCRAS cancer registration database. The work you do will inform patient care and have an impact on patient outcomes.

Main duties of the job
More about the role
Input patient identifiable cancer data onto the NCRAS cancer registration system. This includes the collection and abstraction of the Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD) from multiple data sources such as pathology, molecular and genomic data, cancer management systems, clinical letters, screening information and death certificates.
Code all cancer data to national and international classifications such as Office of Population and Census (OPCS4) procedure codes and the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) using judgement to decide on the appropriate code or action for difficult cases.
With difficult cases use judgement to decide either on the appropriate coding, or to obtain more information from senior registration officers to allow coding.
Develop in depth knowledge of designated cancer site(s) in order to facilitate the abstraction of information associated with the site(s), and appropriate coding. Use this expertise to advise others within NCRS.
Respond to the changing needs of the department as new sources of electronic data are received from trusts and require reconciliation with existing data.
Contribute to the overall improvement of data quality of the NCRS cancer registration database.
Resolve errors identified on the NCRS cancer registration database by validation or data conversion checks.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.
Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the bottom of the pay band.
