Job summary
GIRFT has a focus to drive down unwarranted clinical variation across England, and the Academy is an invaluable part of identifying & promoting best practice through a wide range of clinical facing products and events in addition to research and evaluation. We are looking for a motivated & creative individual, but also with an eye for detail to lead the existing team in the coming years.
You will be educated to Masters level or equivalent, with significant experience of working at a senior level, and working closely with clinicians with a clear understanding of QI methodologies, applied behavioural science and product design.
Main duties of the job
Lead and work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across GIRFT, the Improvement Directorate, regions, systems and provider organisations.
The post holder will have accountability and responsibility for the strategic and operational development of the GIRFT Academy and plans to achieve the strategy will be underpinned by the delivery of short to medium term objectives.
Key aspects of this role will be to:
- Ensure the strategy is formulated, understood by all stakeholders and is delivered utilising all available resources efficiently and effectively.
- Ensure the development and management of relevant strategic plans, to address unwarranted variation across the NHS.
- Ensure appropriate system and processes are in place to enable the implementation of the strategy plans in organisations.
- Proactively manage the key risks and issues associated with ensuring appropriate actions are taken to mitigate or respond.
- Monitoring and establishing accountability on the overall progress of the strategy to ensure completion within agreed timescales.
- Manage the whole budgetary implications of activity.
- Avoid the destabilisation of business as usual.
- Manage and actively promote the relationships with key stakeholders.

The GIRFT Academy works closely with clinical and operational colleagues to identify and capture evidence based best practice identified through the GIRFT programme and data analysis, and provide a wide range of support offers including development of best practice procedure pathways, co-produced and co-badged guidance for implementation and targeted research to ensure the efficacy of the changes.
Improving quality and outcomes
- To reduce unwarranted variation of clinical outcomes through identification, promotion and implementation of evidence based best practice.
- To work collaboratively across the NHS England matrix, including integrating the National Directors portfolio.
Enabling patient and public involvement
- To act as a champion for patients and their interests and involve the public and patients in product development and decision-making.
- Promoting equality and reducing inequalities
- To uphold organisational policies and principles on the promotion of equality
- to create an inclusive working environment where diversity is valued, everyone can contribute, and everyday actions ensure we meet our duty to uphold and promote equality
Partnership and cross boundary working
- To work with clinical professional bodies, patients & public, provider organisations, system, regional and national colleagues to ensure consistency of approach and avoid duplication of effort

- To model a collaborative and influencing style of working, negotiating with others to achieve the best outcomes. Embedding this approach across the Directorate.
Using insight and evidence for improvement
- To utilise variation data and qualitative evidence of variation and achievement of best practice to develop user friendly improvement products and support which will be used by clinical, operational and service improvement colleagues across the NHS.
- Maintain rigorous standards of Academy products ensuring best practice requirements are met prior to publication
Developing an excellent organisation
- To ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of all staff within the department.
- To ensure compliance with all confidentiality and governance requirements within the department.
