Job summary
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) is head of profession for the 50,000-strong Healthcare Science workforce. The workforce provides the scientific backbone of the NHS and Public Health services, working across the four divisions of laboratory (pathology) sciences, physiological sciences, medical physics and clinical engineering, and bioinformatics.
As a Regional CSO, the post holder will work as part of a regional health system to enable science to transform the way healthcare science services are delivered in the region.
The post holder will work closely with the current Regional CSO as well as the Office of CSO, the National School of Healthcare Science and the Academy of Healthcare Science, offering scientific advice, expertise and undertaking responsibilities as and when required.
The post holder(s) will be part of a broad leadership team, provide evidence-based advice and guidance to the NHS and wider healthcare and social system inclusive of science in health and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The individuals will provide Healthcare science advice into the CSO office and support the work of the CSO's programme team.
The post holder will co-lead and advise on work relating to Emerging scientific, Quality, Workforce and Clinical Services.
A critical part of the role will be collaborating and coordinating with colleagues within the NHS
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work with the existing regional CSO to develop effective strategies for promoting and enhancing healthcare science across the region and nationally. Working closely with national and regional colleagues to:
Support the delivery of the region's Medical directorate objectives
Support the delivery of the CSO objectives
Drive the strategy for, supporting and ensuring alignment across the system
Drive the strategy for, supporting and ensuring alignment across the system in relation to AMR
Drive reform and support organisational change and uptake of initiatives that support excellence
Develop and communicate the vision for Healthcare Science, science in health, the CSO team and strategy and operational policies to support this vision
Engage with key strategic regional and national policy makers to inform development of strategy and policies
Identify examples of national and international best practice and to ensure that NHSE, patients and Midlands' citizens benefits from relevant innovations in healthcare
Support development by developing the innovation infrastructure and capacity in organisations
Develop and champion new initiatives or projects as necessary
Working with providers and clinical experts to design new training products
