Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the North East and Yorkshire Regional team within NHS England for a Chief Nurse. This is a key leadership role in the regional health system, with responsibility, in conjunction with other leaders from across the professional spectrum, for delivery of high-quality nursing and midwifery services for the region's population, in line with NHS and other governmental priorities.

The Chief Nurse will provide expert professional nursing leadership and advise the Regional Director on quality and clinical assurance. This will require high calibre, credible and trusted leadership to support commissioners, providers and systems to deliver and commission high quality care in line with the requirements of Long Term Plan.

As regional Chief Nurse, the post holder will be expected to use expert knowledge of quality care combined with a robust knowledge of the health and care service. Working in collaboration with relevant colleagues, they will take the regional leadership responsibility for: clinical and professional leadership for nursing and midwifery staff, patient safety (in conjunction with the regional Medical Director) patient experience and delivery of national priorities and relevant national strategies.

The post holder, as a member of the regional executive team, will support the Regional Director to deliver the objectives of NHS England.

Main duties of the job

The Chief Nurse will take the lead on initiatives identified by the Regional Director, and through personal action and professional leadership shape and develop a culture of continuous service improvement that benefits patients. Operating in a matrix fashion, the post holder will utilise specialists, and bring their clinical expertise and knowledge to bear across NHS England to ensure clinical engagement and coordination is at the heart of the assurance and improvement roles.

The Chief Nurse will provide professional support to the Regional Director. They may lead or support initiatives set out by the Chief Nursing Officer for England in relation to commissioning or the National Nursing and midwifery agenda.

  • Significant experience as the (Senior Nurse) advising a Board in two or more types of health organisation (NHS Trust/FT/SHA/PCT etc.) including both provider and commissioner experience.
  • Recent and relevant experience of effectively leading and managing teams of multi-disciplinary staff through contemporary smart working methods and achieving high levels of staff satisfaction.
  • Evidence of widely acknowledged expertise in each of the specialist domains relevant to this role e.g. clinical safety, quality assurance improvement, etc. including papers published, national/international conference presentations, invited lectures, additional specialist qualifications, leadership of National committee/working parties.
  • Extensive Knowledge of Nursing and Midwifery practice and education policy
  • Knowledge of the FT application processes, compliance regime and quality framework and CQC compliance framework
  • Knowledge of Adult and Child Safeguarding
  • Knowledge of IPC practice and policy, Nursing and Midwifery, experience of managing complex professional regulatory.
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical practice and a strong understanding of the concepts which underpin approaches to improving the delivery of compassionate care to patients within health and social systems
