Job summary
CHIEF DENTAL OFFICER
NHS England is recruiting to the role of Chief Dental Officer. The Chief Dental Officer is the national professional lead for oral health strategy and dental care in England.
The role holds national responsibility for clinical dental care policy and standards for oral health and dentistry with a focus on integration of oral health across the health care system to improve outcome for patients. The postholder has a statutory responsibility to provide senior clinical oversight and leadership to bring greater consistency, greater clinical engagement and a more system wide approach to further improve NHS dental services and oral health.
The Chief Dental Officer plays a pivotal role in the Medical Directorate, as well as a cross sector role, supporting the Department of Health and Social Care, the Privy Council and other Government departments such as DEFRA and DfE, providing evidence-based policy and advice, guidance, and direction for the clinical standards of commissioned services, oral health promotion, regulation and professional standards, education and training of a dental workforce in support of population health improvement.
Main duties of the job
Key Functional Responsibilities:
The post-holder will provide strong national clinical leadership working closely with NHSE Director of Strategy, Director of Prevention and Director of NHSE Primary Care Commissioning Policy team in the design and delivery of strategic and national planning, analysing national oral health needs, setting the objectives and commissioning responsibilities of NHS England.
Examples include:
- Provide national leadership for quality and patient safety
- Provide clinical and professional expertise and leadership
- Provide advocacy for patients and the profession to secure and sustain high quality oral health
- Design, develop and advise on clinical standards, regulation and workforce policy
- Support workforce policy development within NHS England WTE Directorate
- Support the Dental Commissioning and System Oversight team in the PCPC directorate
- Supporting the development of local clinical leadership
