Job summary
A great opportunity has arisen to offer a secondment into the Deputy Chief Midwifery Officer for Maternity Safety, Quality and Improvement role at NHS England until 31 July 2024.
Working alongside the Chief Midwifery Officer and Deputy Chief Midwifery Officer for Leadership and Professional Matters the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and professional guidance nationally, working with key stakeholders across the health system to ensure that the NHS ambitions outlined in the recently published Three Year Delivery Plan for maternity and neonatal services to be safe, personalised, equitable and kind are realised.

Main duties of the job
There are three key responsibilities:
- Providing strategic professional midwifery leadership and expert guidance on safety and quality of maternity services
- Clinical and Strategic Leadership for the delivery of the Three Year Delivery Plan for maternity and neonatal services and the maternity commitments of the NHS Long Term Plan.
- Strategic leadership of the Maternity Safety Support Programme ensuring that the programme is continuously evolving and progressing to deliver improvements in maternity services.
The successful candidate will hold current midwifery registration and be able to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of current maternity policy, NHS systems and thinking in relation to safety, personalisation of care and quality improvement. They will be able to demonstrate significant successful leadership at senior level with a proven track record of change leadership and delivery, creation of positive cultures, relationship building, political acumen, working with service users and tackling inequalities in maternity.
About us
The role is situated in the Chief Midwifery Officer for England's Office which is based in the Chief Nursing Officer's Directorate. The team works very closely with the Maternity and Neonatal Programme team and specialised commissioning to ensure the multi-disciplinary working required for safe improvement of services can be delivered. The team is focussed on collaborative working in a compassionate and psychologically safe environment.

- Current UK NMC Midwifery qualification and registration without sanction.
- Educated to Masters level or equivalent level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level in specialist area.
Knowledge and experience
Essential
- Subject matter expertise across a number of key areas relating to: midwifery, maternity, leadership, strategy, quality improvement, safety, system change
- Proven and significant leadership experience from a regional and/or national perspective and/or formal management qualification with proven success
- Experience of working with the NMC and influencing regulation.
- Proven Board level/ preferably regional or national board level experience of leading and delivering complex change and strategy development programmes in a politically sensitive and complex environment.
- Experience and/or expert understanding of the UK Health Economy, NHS Systems, and current maternity policy.
- Experience of successfully operating in and delivering priorities in a partnership environment.
- Significant experience of managing and prioritising a large budget with solid knowledge of financial process requirements.
- Significant evidence of continued professional development.
