Job summary

NHS England is now recruiting for the new cohort of multidisciplinary National Clinical Directors (NCDs) and National Specialty Advisors (NSAs). Our NCDs and NSAs are a group of senior practising clinicians from a range of clinical backgrounds who provide overarching national clinical leadership to the organisation to support our programmes and priorities in addition to their clinical practice in the NHS. They haveextensive knowledge of their specialty areas, current experience in frontline NHS services, and can provide agile and responsive advice to sense check local and national initiatives.

The NCD will provide overarching specialist clinical leadership and advice for NHS England in these respects:o Clinical advice and leadership to drive transformation of services for patients through corporate programmes and Long-Term Plan workstreams;

o Clinical advice and leadership to support the commissioning of services. The NCD may, where appropriate, be responsible for chairing the relevant specialised commissioning programme of care board.

o Clinical advice to support development of policy and parliamentaryaccountability.

Main duties of the job

The NCD plays a crucial role in promoting effective coordination and collaboration with other clinical leads within the organisation. This includes working closely with the relevant National Specialty Advisors, GIRFT chair, GIRFT clinical leads, CRG chairs, WTE leads, and NHS Impact programmes to ensure that all their specialty areas are aligned with national policy and strategy.

About us

The National Clinical Director (NCD) will be the lead clinical advisor to NHS England's major programmes of work. They will work with programme senior responsible owners and other stakeholders to develop and deliver the programme's ambitions improving the quality and value of healthcare services and ensuring programmes are clinically focused and credible.The NCD for Diabetes will be responsible for the provision of high quality clinical leadership and advice to drive:o The NHS England Diabetes Programme and delivery of commitments around diabetes prevention, treatment and care outlined in both the Five Year Forward

View and the NHS Long Term Plan, including:o The Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programmeo NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programmeo The NHS England Diabetes Treatment and Care Programmeo The NHS England Diabetes Digital Programme

o Clinical coherence across the obesity, diabetes prevention and diabetes care pathway, ensuring alignment with the NHS England Obesity Programme and delivery of the Obesity components of the NHS Long Term Plano Provision of over-arching oversight and leadership of the GIRFT Programmes for both Diabetes and Endocrinology/Obesity NCDs will also contribute to definition of the outcome measures by which clinicians and patients recognise services should be judged.
