Job summary

A unique opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and experienced Obstetrician to join NHS Resolutions Early Notification (EN) team as a National Obstetric Clinical Fellow on a fixed-term or secondment basis for one year. The successful candidate will start as soon as possible in 2024 if agreed with deanery. There will also be two additional roles available in February/March 25, if interested please indicate on your application.

In April 2017, NHS Resolution launched the EN scheme, since then, all maternity services have been required to notify NHS Resolution of incidents where there is the potential for long-term severe brain injury. The aims of the scheme are:

  • Investigate potential eligibility for compensation and take proactive action to reduce legal costs and improve the experience for the family and affected staff;
  • Share learning rapidly with the individual trust and the wider system in order to support safety improvement and prevent the same things happening again.
  • Build on our Saying Sorry and Being Fair work to ensure the process to obtain compensation is not a barrier to openness, candour and learning;
  • Preserve evidence to ensure we are able to respond to cases that a family may choose to bring at a later date; and
  • Improve the process for obtaining compensation for families, meeting needs in real time where possible to reducing the risk of claims increasing in value.

Main duties of the job

This is a unique opportunity to work at a national level and contribute to improving outcomes in maternity care. A large proportion of the role will involve leading and managing the workload for a region in England and reviewing case files and providing feedback on how we can best learn from claims to prevent future harm.

Additional responsibilities include the opportunity to lead on a project within the organisation, represent NHS Resolution at external meetings with key stakeholders in maternity care, lead on the triage of cases reported into the scheme and work with the EN family liaison and mediation lead and wider team to support the development of the scheme, lead presentations internally and externally for Trusts.
