Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join the leadership team of the Technical Claims Unit at NHS Resolution.

The Technical Claims Unit (TCU) is a team of highly specialised technical claims managers dealing with the most complex and high value clinical negligence and personal injury claims against the NHS in England. The team acts as a point of referral for the wider claims teams to advise on strategy and decision making in these very difficult cases. Referrals may relate to seven figure birth injury claims, complex legal issues including illegality, wrongful birth or secondary victims, sensitive matters relating to contributory negligence or proposals to resile from admissions, cases involving surveillance and fraud, the investigation and management of group litigation and related concerns and much more.

Three Heads of TCU are responsible for both the line management and technical leadership of the team and work across the wider organisation to ensure the delivery of technical excellence. The management team reports to the Deputy Technical Claims Director for all technical and managerial purposes.

We now have an exciting opportunityto join the team as a Head of Technical Claims.

You will join a dynamic and supportive environment where your expertise and dedication will make a tangible difference to claims and the organisation as a whole.

If you are ready to make a transformative impact and lead a remarkable team towards even greater heights, we eagerly await your application.

Main duties of the job

Are you a confident and articulate communicator who thrives in high-pressure situations?

As a Head of Technical Claims, you'll be one of the go-to people for providing input into critical communications with external stakeholders including our scheme members, Members of Parliament and the press. Your words will carry weight as you prepare Board reports, provide lines for answers to parliamentary questions, and draft press releases for high-profile cases.

Your analytical expertise will shine in this role as you assess significant concerns, manage cases reaching the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, and provide expert guidance on complex claims. Your keen judgement will be vital as you navigate cases with substantial financial and/or repercussive implications and when representing NHS Resolution in external meetings.

Organisation and leadership will be your strengths as you manage a team of Technical Claims Managers, ensuring they work to high standards. You'll oversee important projects and contribute to the development of innovative training programmes, empowering your team to excel.

You'll have the opportunity to grow professionally, engage with high-level stakeholders, and play a crucial role in shaping the future of clinical negligence claims. Embrace this unique challenge and lead the charge in delivering exceptional service and transformative solutions.

A note from our recruiting manager:

I moved to NHS Resolution from private practice 10 years ago and there's a reason I've stayed so long: it's a wonderful place to work! For me, the biggest pull is the people. We have fantastic people who genuinely care about the work that they do and those around them. We take our work very seriously because we are acutely aware that each claim involves an injured patient, regardless of whether liability attaches, and that the impact upon them and their families is significant. However, our approach between colleagues is much more relaxed and there's a very inclusive and supportive culture with the opportunity for everyone to be heard.

Before I'd even set foot in NHS Resolution I knew I wanted to be part of the Technical Claims Unit. I wanted to be working on the most complex and high value cases, being part of decisions that could arguably shape clinical negligence law in England and Wales. I've been fortunate to be part of TCU for 9 years, involved in high profile group actions, contempt proceedings and cases we've taken to the Supreme Court. For the last two years I have been leading the team as one of the Heads of TCU and now need to replace myself. The dynamic between the three Heads works well, with each taking responsibility for discrete areas of work and meeting regularly to discuss issues and monitor progress. You couldn't wish for a better team to lead: our people are incredibly bright and experts in their field yet grounded, approachable and friendly. Working alongside these dedicated professionals will be an enriching and fulfilling experience, making it an unparalleled opportunity for the right leader to inspire and elevate our collective achievements.

SELECTION PROCESS INFORMATION:

Please note that we accept CV's for this role. You must include a supporting statement along with the CV and demonstrate that you have read the published person specification and how you meet the essential and (where relevant) desirable criteria for this particular post. A written assessment which will be used for further shortlisting. The written assessment will be undertaken in the week commencing 28/082023.

A formal interview and further assessments which will be held via conference call or video-based interaction rather than face to face meetings. The assessments & interviews date is scheduled on 14 and 15 September 2023 , and will be used to assess knowledge, skills and competency of the candidates.

We communicate with our candidates via phone and email, please ensure you have added the mobile phone number and your personal email address in the contact fields on application.

Please note: If you require a Visa to work in the UK, NHS Resolution is currently unable to support any sponsorship requests.

The Technical Claims Unit at NHS Resolution is London and Leeds based and we will be happy to talk to you about flexible/hybrid working arrangements as part of the application and interview process. Home working is subject to meeting homeworking assessment requirements, (including a minimum broadband speed of 18Mbps and a dedicated work space).

Please note that where a home worker is appointed to the position, there will be an ad hoc requirement of attendance in person at team away days, member events, senior meetings and to meet with direct reports. It is anticipated that this will average at around one day per month.
