Job summary

NHS Resolution is a not-for-profit part of the NHS working for health care providers to resolve claims fairly and to share learning across the NHS and beyond. We provide a supportive environment for our staff with specialist training and the opportunity for personal development.

NHS Resolution operates a number of indemnity schemes, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, primarily for the handling of liability claims against English NHS Trusts and other commissioners and/or providers of NHS care.

In April 2017 NHS Resolution launched the Early Notification (EN) scheme. The Early Notification Scheme is a key initiative to achieving the delivery of safer maternity care, and this scheme investigates brain injuries at birth for the purposes of determining if clinical negligence has caused the harm. We do this by requiring our Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts (CNST) members to notify us of maternity incidents that meet a certain criteria and we carry out an early investigation into these incidents.

This is an exciting time for the function with a wide range of opportunities available to support our aims in delivering our future vision.

NHS Resolution is thereforelooking to recruit Senior Case Managers on a permanent basis for a minimum of six months within the EN Team, which is part of both the wider Claims Directorate and Safety & Learning Directorate.

Main duties of the job

The Early Notification scheme is an innovative scheme for NHS Resolutions strategic approach with the aim of:

  • Taking proactive steps to investigate any potential civil liability to reduce costs
  • Ensuring that local/national learning takes place and safer practice is incentivised
  • Providing support to members, clinicians and families throughout their own investigation process;

Accountable to the Head of EN (Legal), and working alongside a team of Senior Case Managers, the post holders will be responsible for supporting and assessing maternity incidents on a day to day basis, working closely with in-house clinicians and managing a complex caseload with variable degrees of litigation risk. Additional responsibilities will include managing and leading on key projects to continue development of the EN scheme, engaging with Member Trusts and other stakeholders, ensuing good governance and supervising new or junior members of staff. An attention for detail and enthusiasm for data quality and integrity is essential.

Please see the attached Job description and Person specification for more information.
