Job summary

The Fire Safety Manager will be responsible to the Estates Compliance Manager and assist in the delivery of a safe and compliant fire safety service, supporting the day to day management of fire safety through HDFT sites. The role will involve the monitoring and utilisation of a range of assessment strategies and reporting tools to ensure HDFT deliver our fire safety responsibilities and requirements in line with statutory requirements, HTM's, HBN's, building regulations and Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and industry best practice and their practical application in varied healthcare environments.

There will also be a requirement to take a significant role in monitoring and reporting on directorate outputs that feed into various assurance groups at local and board level. Extensive knowledge and experience in providing expert advice to managers and staff at all levels of the organisation, including planning comprehensive and structured programmes of fire safety risk assessments, and fire safety drills will be essential whilst forming part of the HIF estates and capital service.

It is essential that the successful candidate can manage a fluid and challenging workload where priorities can change regularly throughout the working day.

Main duties of the job

  • Provides professional advice to the General Manager of Estates and Senior Management within the organisation on fire safety issues, including the compilation, prioritisation and regular review of a fire precautions backlog and modernisation works schedule, prioritised using a risk managed approach.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that current risk assessments are available for all areas and that a programme of reviews is in place and that assessments are re-validated if any structural alterations, changes of use or occupancy occur. To ensure that risk assessment recommendations/actions are actioned appropriately by Trust management and auditable records are maintained. Ensure that the Facilities Risk Register is regularly reviewed and updated in relation to fire safety.
  • To ensure that all areas and specifically those occupied by patients have documented and agreed evacuation procedures that preserve the safety of occupants in the event of a fire alert.

About us

The post holder will work under the direction of the Estates Compliance Manager and Associate Director of Estates and Capital Delivery but will be expected to work autonomously to prioritise their own / team workload.

Methods to include e-learning, remote training using Microsoft Teams, and face to face training methods as appropriate; include specialist methods where appropriate such as the use of a fire training simulator used in conjunction with fire extinguisher training, and the use of Evac-Chair and other associated evacuation equipment.
  • Ensure that appropriate managers and staff are aware of current legislation and any future changes that will affect the Trust.
  • Work closely with managers to achieve fire safety objectives in relation to capital and planned/unplanned maintenance work.
  • Ensure that training targets agreed with management are achieved and provide quarterly reports on progress. Ensure that systems are in place for the recording and distribution of staff training information.
