Job summary
The HIF Portering and Logistics Manager will ensure a high quality, timely, responsive, costeffective and pro-active portering service, to meet the needs the Company on behalf of the wards and departments under Harrogate & Rural District Foundation Trust (HDFT). You will ensure that service users, materials and equipment are safely and appropriately transferred around the hospital to the standard required whilst delivering an effective and efficient service that meets contractual obligation, KPI's and in accordance with agreed Company and Trust policies and procedures.
The HIF Portering and Logistics Manager will hold the responsibility for the management of the HIF Portering Department and logistical service support, providing effective leadership and direct management of all Portering staff and service development and improvement inclusive of logistical management throughout all areas. The provision of strong and visible leadership within the company as well as both direct and indirect service support for the Trust is required.
Main duties of the job
The management and development of the Portering Services and logistics within the Company to ensure the delivery of an efficient service in line with recognised good practice, operational policies and health, safety and hygiene regulations. Direct responsibility for approximately 50 staff and the following services:

The Portering Service work as a team to provide the best possible standards or services to patients and staff.
The Company shall provide a Portering Service to deliver the movement of patients within the
Harrogate District Hospital (HDH) and Ripon Community Hospital (RCH) sites, courier vehicle service to designated locations, reception desk duties (HDH) - shared with General Office, additional specified duties as set out in the Scope of Service and an evening Security Round (HDH).
The Portering Service shall be provided 24 hours per day, 365(6) days per year (HDH) and from 09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday and 08:00 to 12:00 noon at weekends to RCH. The Portering Service applies to all areas of Harrogate District Hospital and the Ripon Community Hospital Site.

- Operational management of the Portering Department, including line management responsibility; performance/conduct management, daily hours/shift patterns, sickness absence and annual leave management. Recruitment & selection of staff, appraisals and personal development reviews, staff development and training to ensure adherence at all times with departmental operational procedures and Company/Trust Policies and Standards.
- To ensure that the electronic staff record system is maintained and updated to reflect staff absence and return to work is collated in a timely manner and in accordance with the Absence Policy.
- To ensure that the staff training matrix is maintained and updated, an annual training requirement schedule is predicted and managed, and that a continuous professional development and investors in people ethos is promoted.
- To have a delegated budgetary responsibility and accountability for Portering PAY and NON-PAY budgets, ensuring effective service delivery and taking action as necessary.
- To ensure that there are mechanisms in place for effective staff engagement and communication. To implement and proactively maintain/enhance communication strategies and techniques to enable swift and concise communication and to enable appropriate staff involvement in decision making.
- Responsible for the delivery of performance standards, Key Performance Indicator monitoring & reporting, financial, workforce, quality & assurance and Health & Safety standards.
- To identify cost effective and efficient methods of service delivery and to contribute to the formulation of cost saving initiatives and service deployment plans and to lead in their implementation.
- To ensure the optimum use of resources and establishing effective processes to ensure financial control in line with standing financial instructions.
- To act as authorised signatory for Portering budget, petty cash handling, Tele Tracking and Roster Pro.
- To lead and co-ordinate performance agenda including finance, activity, performance, national and local standards, workforce, quality and safety.
- Regularly benchmark services and workforce establishment as an integral part of the service development and business planning process to ensure effective use of resources.
- To ensure that activity and workforce reporting is accurate, timely, effective and contributes to effective financial management.
- To lead by example, proactively developing the leadership, managerial and business capability within the Portering Department. To act as a positive role model in order to promote a professional and well-motivated workforce adhering to and promoting both the Trust and the Company core values.
