Job summary

Gloucestershire Managed Services (GMS) is a subsidiary of Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust, dedicated to delivering high-performing managed estates and facilities serves. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Estates to play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the safety, functionality, and compliance of our healthcare facilities.

This role involves supporting the Associate Director of Estates to ensure our healthcare properties are safe, well-maintained, and compliant with relevant regulations. This position will oversee a wide range of engineering, safety, and environmental management tasks, ensuring a secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this job include:

- Ensuring a cost-effective, efficient, and safe maintenance service for healthcare properties using both direct labour and contractors.

- Overseeing internal and external estates management to provide reliable, compliant, and cost-effective services.

- Maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.

- Utilising MiCAD as the platform for the Computer Aided Facilities management (CAFM) system ensuring streamlined operations.

- Liase directly with the Capital Team and Capital Projects to support effective project execution.

- Monitoring the performance and quality of services from in-house teams and external suppliers

- Managing mechanical (e.g. decontamination, ventilation) and electrical systems (e.g. security alarms, fixed plants).

- Managing estates and maintenance budgets to ensure projects stay within budget and on schedule.

- Creating reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

- Managing risks related to estates, maintenance, fire, waste, and environmental issues, and advising on mitigation strategies.

- Coordinating activities for large estates and facilities projects, resolving conflicts when necessary.

- Ensuring compliance with statutory and environmental risks related to the built environment.

- Handling HR functions, including performance reviews, recruitment, absence management, and staff training.

- Deputising for the Associate Director of Estates when required.

  • Professional knowledge acquired through a degree plus specialist knowledge and equivalent level of substantial experience in a relevant field e.g. surveying, construction or engineering (or working towards such)
  • Membership of professional body/bodies e.g. CIOB, RICS, RIBA, CIBSE, IWFM (BIFM), IHEEM
  • Hold NEBOSH (D) or willing to work towards. Hold IOSH (E)

Desirable

  • Working towards a masters qualification
  • Project management qualification or demonstrated equivalent experience
