Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within for a competent Fire Safety Advisor. The post holder will be required to work within the Estates and Facilities Division based primarily at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, but expected to work at Healthcare properties on a countywide basis as necessary.

The main duties will include providing fire safety advice to the organisation, providing detailed and bespoke fire safety training and undertaking detailed and comprehensive fire risk assessments.

Interviews will be held the week of 16th January

Main duties of the job

Essential qualifications are

  • An accredited Higher National Certificate or Diploma.
  • Registered professional with a recognised Fire Engineering body.
  • An approved Occupational Health & Safety qualification with the National Examinations Board of Safety & Health (NEBOSH) or The Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH).
  • Relevant Fire Safety professional experience within a large organisation.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Advise in the interpretation and application of the provisions of legislation, Firecode and other guidance to ensure the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are able to meet their legal obligations.
  • Support the Trusts in Clinical Governance criteria targets regarding Fire Safety and Health & Safety issues.
  • Provide and maintain a central reference for fire safety and health and safety matters. To maintain up to date fire protection/system drawings and information for each Trust site, continually updating the library of information available.
  • Liaise with Estates Staff and Planning Teams, Local Authority Building Control and Fire Authorities in the preparation of projects leading to the compilation of contract specifications and drawings, in order that Fire Precautionary Works comply with Fire Regulations in new and existing premises.
  • Undertake Fire Risk Assessments in healthcare premises using the techniques of Firecode and interpreting other guidance to report and compile recommendations requiring action for Line Manager and the Maintenance Department. Prepare and prioritise Trusts Capital Fire Precautionary Works Programmes and Project manage such works within budget.
  • Produce Annual Fire Reports to the Trust Boards providing them with information and statistics pertaining to the compliance of Firecode. Keeping accurate records of all fire/false alarm incidents.
  • Plan, design and develop training programmes. Liaise with the organisation to provide regular fire drills and staff training. Witness the effectiveness or otherwise of fire drills recommending remedial action when necessary. Compile accurate records of staff training and fire drills centrally and at each workplace in order to comply with Health Technical Memorandum 05-02.
  • Managing and supervising adequate provision, siting and effective maintenance of all first aid fire fighting equipment, fire safety signs and notices to ensure safety of all persons.
  • Liaising with Contractors and take effective steps to ensure that their activities do not subvert Fire Precautions in existing premises.
  • To support the Estates Capital Managers in works relating to health and safety and to undertake specific designated tasks.
  • Advise the Trusts on products and materials, fire safety or other, to be used in healthcare premises installed both my Maintenance Teams and Contractors when undertaking upgrade/new works. Communicate with external suppliers and manufacturing agencies that produce such equipment.
  • To work with Line Managers in the compilation and up dating of Trusts Fire Safety Policies and Strategies in accordance with current regulations, drawing up Procedures for the safe evacuation of patients, visitors and staff from premises.
