Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic and forward thinking Band 5 nurse to complete our team.This post is a developmental post and the post holder will be supported to complete training in all aspects of sexual health within a two year time scale.

The Sexual Health Nurse will work in a busy integrated sexual health environment, within a multidisciplinary team, with an infrastructure supporting the delivery of core services.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for the post holder, as is an enthusiasm for learning and professional development.

The post holder will assess, plan and deliver key aspects of sexual health care depending on the knowledge, skills and experience of the practitioner, to include the promotion/issuing of all methods of contraception (with particular emphasis on long acting reversible contraception), screening for sexual transmitted infections (STIs), perform diagnostic procedures and provide treatment and management of STIs in line with BASHH/ FSRH and NICE guidance.

Key Responsibilities/Duties

1

Provides a confidential, safe environment so patients can discuss any sexual health issues and concerns

Undertakes an assessment for implementing a holistic approach to individual focused care.

Provides all service users with appropriate and relevant information regarding their diagnosis, treatment or method of chosen contraception.

Provides under 18s with an assessment of need and competence using Fraser guidelines and associated policies for the under 16s.

Prescribes/issues prescription only medication under Patient Group Directions (PGDs), once fully competent, depending on patient need.

To undertake cervical cytology screening, contraception, STI screening, and microscopy independently once fully competent.

Access staff supervision and attend team meetings and teaching sessions.

Refers patients to the Health Adviser team to provide ongoing health promotion and to facilitate contact tracing.

Links in with the wider sexual health teams to provide networking and information

Undertakes direct patient care assessment and implements a holistic approach to individual focused care.

Utilises the services Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Provides support to the clinic manager for implementing any new ways of working or developments within the sexual health service.

Undertakes the daily checking of equipment when assigned to do so, i.e. cryogenics equipment and oxygen cylinders to ensure that they are safe to use.

Manages stock rotation and is mindful of waste.

Maintains own competencies through personal development and training.

Facilitates the training of pre/post registration students.

Assists in the training needs of the service, supporting staff who are new to the team.

Uses the Inform software as the services method of Electronic Patient Records (EPR) using the templates which support the nature of service the patient has chosen to access.

Links in with the wider Sexual Health Teams and Healthy Lifestyles to provide networking and information.
