Job summary

Are you looking to broaden your experience by working elsewhere? We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate band 3 Support Worker in Sexual Health to join the team at Severnfields Sexual Health clinic in Shropshire. It is a permanent full time (37.5hrs) position over five days. 30hrs will be considered over 4 days.

The post holder will be required to work in collaboration with members of the sexual health team, contributing to the promotion and provision of high quality care for patients seeking advice, screening and treatment in contraception and sexual health and Genito-Urinary Medicine settings across Shropshire. The post holder will support the sexual health team and work autonomously where appropriate, duties to include Phlebotomy, Blood Pressure, Weight, Height and Body Mass Index calculations, pregnancy testing, collecting Mid Stream Urine samples including urinalysis, condom demonstrations, chaperoning, assisting and preparing for the sessions within sexual health.

The post holder will also be responsible for increasing young people's access to condoms through the co-ordination of the Shropshire Condom Distribution Scheme (CDS)

Main duties of the job

Assist in clinic sessions as directed by the Nurse Team Leader to ensure the smooth running of the clinics.

Carry out Venepuncture during the clinical sessions or work towards

To participate in planned procedures and prescribed care for patients under the direction of medical and nursing colleagues, which includes preparing for and assisting clinicians with Intra-uterine device fittings/removals, implant insertion/removal, swab sample taking and Cervical Cytology.

To act as a chaperone for clinical staff offering intimate examinations to patient's as and when necessary.

To undertake condom teaching and advice to patients promoting safe sex issues including prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

To participate in and attend staff meetings, and engage in working parties as required, to ensure timely access to information and be a part of the decision-making process of the service.

Recognise and understand the need for maintaining confidentiality at all times, to respect the individual needs of the patients.

Accurately complete laboratory forms as directed by nursing and medical staff, to meet record keeping audit standards.

Identify and order clinical supplies as directed to ensure accurate and appropriate stock levels are maintained

To work as an integral part of the sexual health team under the direction of the Nurse Team Leader to promote contraception and sexual health issues ensuring the wellbeing of patients

Assist in clinic sessions as directed by the Nurse Team Leader to ensure the smooth running of the clinics.

To actively support in obtaining urine or vulvo-vaginal specimens from patients ensuring process for collection completed .Act as an advocate to young people within the sexual health settings and different venues, through the delivery of effective support and information, and thus enabling them to make the appropriate choices and decisions

Undertake an annual personal development review with the Nurse Team Lead and agree a Personal Development Plan to ensure that the job description is accurate and reflects any role changes required to meet the needs of the service, and identifies any necessary training requirements.

To support and act as good role model for new Healthcare Support Workers within the service.

Participate in induction programmes for new service staff and training programmes for students, to ensure that all aspects of service delivery are conveyed.

Participate in clinical supervision as directed by Trust policy, to ensure access to ongoing personal support.

To liaise with all other professionals and agencies, building partnerships to promote health across other services wherever possible, to benefit patients and communities.

To participate in and attend staff meetings, and engage in working parties as required, to ensure timely access to information and be a part of the decisionmaking process of the service.

Work within limitations of the role using own initiative when and where appropriate.

To undertake duties in a timely way, maximising the quality of the service.

To adhere to clinical practices, policies, procedures and guidelines that pertain to the Specialist & Family Services Directorate, ratified by Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, to maximise the quality of service provision.

To assist with investigation of complaints in accordance with agreed policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with Trust policy.

To act in accordance with Child Protection policies and attend updates to maximise the safety of patients.

To be aware of and comply with all appropriate Trust policies and procedures, to enable safe and effective working practices.
