Job summary

NWLP is based on a 'hub and spoke' structure; the majority of routine, specialist and non-urgent activity is centralised at the hub site at Charing Cross Hospital which is where the Electron Microscopy Service is based.The partnership has created an innovative and sustainable service that delivers outstanding quality to users and patients alike. We are now offering a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and dynamic Band 5 Qualified or Trainee Biomedical Scientist to join our Electron Microscopy Unit. You will become part of a team providing a specialised diagnostic service to patients within the Hospital and for external users. Your duties will include: specimen reception, including data entry onto LIMS, sample preparation, embedding and sectioning. Archiving slides, blocks and reports and document control.

Main duties of the job

Applications are sought from self-motivating individuals who have, or will undertake, a HCPC/IBMS approved degree and IBMS registration portfolio. You should have good communication skills and the ability to manage work and study. Suitable applicants must have a good background and experience in core laboratory duties including embedding, microtomy, staining, and quality control. Staff in this grade who are not HCPC Registered will take direction from appropriately qualified HCPC registered staff.

Duties within the Unit will include:

Specimen reception, checking patient information and sample type, sorting and numbering of specimens.

Entering specimen details onto the LIMs system.

Tissue processing, embedding and sectioning for ultrastructural examination.

In-house preparation of solutions and equipment maintenance.

Ownership, review and creation of controlled documents including standard operating procedures and risk assessments.

Compliance with quality standards required in service provision and participation in internal and external quality control.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Essential

  • 2nd class Honours Degree in a biological science which is acceptable by IBMS/HCPC for Registration
  • Higher academic qualification equivalent to Foundation Degree.
  • Enrolled in first year of accredited BSc

Desirable

  • Once Registered, undertake the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in the relevant discipline.

SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Methodical - Able to follow instruction
  • Good communication and presentation skills.
