Job summary

South Tyneside District Hospital is looking to recruit a Catering Supervisor/Head Chef to support the Managers and other Supervisors.

You will be required to supervise approximately 30 staff per shift to include chefs & food service assistants.

You be required to direct staff and supervise where necessary making changes to work routines to meet the demands and needs of the service patient meal service and staff/visitor restaurant service.

A full clean UK driving licence is required. A flexible approach to work and work routine is essential as you will be expected to cover several different areas/roles, possibly in the same day. Your work base will be South Tyneside, however you may be expected to work at St Benedicts Hospice in Sunderland from time to time. The role is a cover-flexible role, your shifts and work pattern will vary from week to week. Weekend working will be frequent and may be 3-4 weekends in succession.

Main duties of the job

To complete daily food service tasks to Trust locations. To ensure the patient, staff and visitor meal service is provided in a safe, clean and hygienic environment. Ensure high standards of cleanliness are met and maintained

Ensures that catering staff undertaking food preparation and cooking do so in line with standard recipes and that food waste is kept to a minimum.

Undertakes food preparation and cooking to ensure that daily production targets are met.

To organise and supervise the day to day food production operation, allocating and covering shifts.

Ensure staff comply in full to the Food Safety Management System when undertaking their duties.

To ensure the safe and hygienic day to day operation of the kitchen and good housekeeping practices are employed.

Highlight areas where the food produced or practices may be improved.

Communicates with colleagues and supervisors on work related issues/procedures.

Provides and receives job related information

Communicates with patients, staff and visitors in order to promote a positive catering service

Provide and receive work related information from / to colleagues

Uses telephone, takes messages and be polite at all times

Reports breakdowns to Estates informs Catering managers

Works & communicates with chefs throughout shift on food service issues providing guidance and supervision where necessary
